I have a Dell '98SE P3, 128ram. we have three users on the system.

The first problem I had was the screen freezing, del ctrl del didn't work, resorted to the reboot button. I've run virus scans and one detected the W32.Netsky.p@mm so I download the removal tools and it said it was not found on the system! As my virus software had expired I downloaded the Norton Internet Security 2005, which also didn't find the virus. And now the computer just shuts down at different times!!!!

I read the posting titled "Time to start fresh" (as it's probably what I should do, but my job requires Word '98 files) and followed the instructions for fixing the scanreg, but the scan gets to 5% and freezes!!

another box that always appears on start up is "long file name back up; bad command line format" and "windows 98 SE Q239887 Update; this programme installs the windows '98 SE Q239887 update. Do you wish to contiue?" Well I have clicked YES and it makes no difference.

I also ran the pconpoint.exe software and it found 366 problems! application 8, add/remove 2, complete reg scan 247, invalid shortcuts 68.

any help GREATLY appreciated! :tazz:

P.S. I just ran the 'scan disk' from (accesories) and it says " restarted 10 times...windows or another programme is writing to this disk"..... :)

You can have those, most do as they do different things, after you download them, close them, then open them and update them before running

Hi,

I have saved the HijackThis scan log, but Microsoft Picture 2000 keeps trying to open it when I open the saved file?!

For most files, right click them then choose open with

If you want a particular file type to always open with a particular programme then right click the file then click properties, click change to change the programme it opens with, put a tick in always use this programmes for files of this type then click apply
