First of all, thank you in advance for helping me out. I don't know much about computers at all, so any help at all is greatly appreciated. Well, I'm pretty sure I'm infected with at least one virus. I have no idea how I got it, but I guess that's not really important at this point. The symptoms I have been having are as follows:

- On September 18, I got a fatal error message saying that "Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger" had an error and needed to close. I haven't recieved this message since, so I'm assuming that it has been cleared up, but I would appreciate if you kept an eye out for it in my log.
- My mouse moves around randomly without my moving it. I will try and move it to the right, but my cursor goes to the left. This happens with my USB mouse and also with the finger-scroller on my laptop.
- While I was on windowsupdate.com, I got a random pop-up ad that sent me to TrafficExplorer.com to do a search for Cincinnati newspapers. This is really weird, considering that I don't even live in Ohio.
- I also recieve the Winfixer/Winantispyware pop-ups. I started getting them when I was on the Panda Activescan website. Winfixer asked me to install an ActiveX control and I said "Don't Install," but it seems to have installed itself anyway. The pop-ups haven't taken over my computer yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.
- I received a random e-mail in my inbox today that was a Yahoo! Auto-Response from someone I have never e-mailed in my life. It came into the address that I don't even e-mail people from, I only use it for incoming mails. Here is a copy of the e-mail:

I am having major problems with Yahoo. Therefor I am asking that you use my [removed email address] address. Thank you for your help. ~~Amanda

Furthermore, on the footer it says "From: Doreen Yarbrough," who is someone I have never heard of...

Well, I'm only hoping I haven't messed my computer up too badly. I used the following steps to try and clear it up:

- downloaded CleanUp! and ran it.
- downloaded Ad-Aware SE and ran it.
- downloaded CW Shredder and ran it. On restart, I got a fatal error message from it, though.
- downloaded Spybot S&D and ran it. It found a few things.
- downloaded Ewido and installed/ran it.
- did the Housecall and Panda online scans. Panda found a few things that it could not delete, Housecall found nothing.
- downloaded TrojanHunter and ran it, found nothing.
- downloaded one optional update from Windows Update (no criticals available)
- I rebooted after doing each one of these.

Here is my HijackThis log... please try to help me, thank you.

Hi sparkle. Welcome to gtg. :tazz:

Could you run hijack this again and post a new log in this thread?

Also,

* Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Hi, thank you so much for helping me! I just wanted to let you know that I am currently in the process of following these directions. I am running the ActiveScan now, and if it finishes before I have to leave then I will post all of the results back here. If not, I will post when I get back home tonight (which won't be for another 13 hours or so, LOL). My computer is on dial-up Internet, so everything takes so much longer. Anyway, thanks for the help (and the patience!) :tazz:

Reboot into safe mode and make sure all files are showing.

Navigate to these folders and delete them:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SideFind
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wsxsvc
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs

Run CleanUp!, reboot and run the scan again and post the results in this thread. You are doing great. :tazz:

You are doing very well for being illiterate. :tazz: Please run a panda scan and show me the results. If those are clear, I'll cut you loose. How is it running?

Well, it looks like I'm not quite clean yet. Here is the results of the Activescan:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/coupons No disinfected Windows Registry

My computer appears to be running better, though. No Winfixer or Dr. Watson popups lately! :tazz: The only problem is that my mouse is still moving around randomly on its own. I don't think it's a problem with my actual mouse because it happens whether I use the mouse or the little scrollpad on my laptop.... Anyway, thanks so much for getting me this far. I am so glad htose stupid popups are gone!

Please scan your system with Ad-aware:
Ad-aware SE - Download - Home Page
  • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
  • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
  • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
  • Once the definitions have been updated:
  • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
    • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
    • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
    • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
    • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
    • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
    • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
    • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
    • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
    • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
    • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
    • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
      • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
    • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
      • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
      • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
      • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
    • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
    • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
    • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
    • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
  • Close all programs except ad-aware.
  • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
  • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.

I deleted all 20 of the objects, but that Columb [sp?] Dialer thing really scared me. Can you look through my HJT log just to make sure it's all gone? Thanks :tazz:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

here

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

that should clean it out. :tazz:
