okay here goes...

My boot time has been right at 4 min (the WinXP screen sits for 60 sec., the Welcome screen for another 1:30, and the desktop take 1:30 util I can use it).

I use my laptop on my work and home network.

I run MS Antispy (3x/week) and Norton Internet Security (scans 3x/week).
Both Panda and Kapersky on line scans show me clean.

I've run CCleaner, defragged using Diskeeper Pro, used TCP/IP optimizer and BootVis (shows a 170 sec. boot) and followed BlackViper services guide.

I've also done the usual tuning/tweaking by unchecking the "Time to display list of OS", used Cachemen, Registry Mechanic, Autoruns, and disabled Windows messenger.

Generally, my performance has improved a bit, but still the slow boot time. Also, my USB mouse (at work and home) is jumpy or intermitantly hangs - I switched to a standard mouse and it improved a bit but it's still an issue. It seems to hang during periods of high CPU usage (opening a new browser window, etc.).

Additionally, when I shut down, I get an "End Program - Sample" error box. I've got nothing running, I think that this was installed yesterday when I installed several of the utilities.

Thanks for your help,

Hello Rick and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have not got an awful lot wrong with your PC, in terms of malware. Whilst I can
clean this up for you, I don’t think it will make much difference to your boot up time. Generally, boot-up time is increased by the amount of programmes loading and in particular security programmes. If you have increased them in number lately, this will probably be the reason.

I think it would be best for me to clean your PC of malware and to advise you to visit our OS and software forums.

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://lawyersgunsan....sportsline.com

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Restart in Safe Mode

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.(3 logs in total)

Hello again Rick

Ewido log shows just some cookies on your system, whilst WinPfind log is negative. Your HJT log is clean, which means that malware is not your problem here, although you do have rather a lot of 023 entries.

I'll bow out at this point and allow you to choose what you want to do next.
