Every time I run Norton antivirus 2002, Ad-Aware SE, Spybot - Search & Destroy, Trend Housecall, Panda Active Scan or TDS-3 they scan for a few seconds or minutes and then my computer makes a whining noise and shuts itself off. I am able to update my antivirus and spyware/adware software but I can't run any of it. I was able to run CWShredder and it found nothing. Thanks in advance for any help you may offer. Here is my hijackthis logfile:

You do have some spyware but nothing serious as far as I can see.

Can you do a defrag without the computer crashing?

Also, if you do have anything you want to back up: now is the time.

Pieter

I'm afraid that it is a hardware problem (with your harddisk).

Do you happen to know which brand it is?

Pieter

they scan for a few seconds or minutes and then my computer makes a whining noise and shuts itself off.

Can you try to describe this noise with a little more detail. Does it only crash when scaning your system?

There may have been a few times in the past month where it crashed when other software was being used, but it crashes every time I try to scan for spyware/adware or use my NAV 2002 (and apparently now too when I tried to defrag). The noise it makes before it crashes only lasts 3-4 seconds and sounds like a cross between a sick cat and a siren.

Well this is a difficult problem to diagnose on a forum, and you may want to get a second opinion from a computer repair shop, but I'm guessing you have a hard drive problem.

Your description sounds like the alarm some hard drives emit when they're overheating. You may have a bearing problem, and when the drive is under heavy load it over heats, and your system crashes. Be sure all the fans in your system are operating, if so, it would be wise to start shopping for a new hard drive. :tazz:

never underestimate the power of dust

besides the start up . or the running processes don't forget to check your
services
right click on "my computer" go to > manage > services and applications > services .. here is a list of what can be disabled from auto start . but b4 using this list as a guide . check your PC for what services you need running,

Alerter

Background Intelligent Transfer Service
ClipBook
COM+ Event System (if your not using COM applications)

I have all of these disabled in services
any sevices running on your PC not on the list is a good place to look for "trojans"
"keyloggers" "spyware" "malware"
just google the service if your not sure what it is

check your FANS/HEAT SINKS anywhere dust can build up and kill your PC
