It looks like I have this bug that other people have....when I'm online
the web tries to go to http://217.170.4.137..._bin/index.html

then it goes to the dos systme where it goes through various lines of text pskill, systinternal, ieplore.e...unable to kill istsvc.exe, sidefid.xe, gjefpet.exe, 1st recover[1].exe, ysbactivex.dll

then it says it cannot register...

(I used some free software to remove viruses but this still happens)

I don't know which anti-spyware to buy - if I need to buy it all all....

please help. thanks.

Create a directory on your hardrive to save HijackThis.exe. A directory like c:\hijackthis. If you do not do this, you will not be able to use the backup/restore features.

Download HijackThis from:

HijackThis Download Site

Save this file into the directory you made previously and then run the program named hijackthis.exe. When the program opens click on the Config button, then click on the Misc Tools button, and click on the Check for update online button. When it completes checking/applying updates press the back button.

Now click on the Scan button and when it is finished click on the Save Log button. A Notepad window will open with the contents of this log. Click on Edit then click on Select all. Then click on Edit and then Click on Copy.

Create a reply to this post here and right click in message area and select paste to paste the log into the post.

Someone will reply to you after reading this post. DO NOT fix any entries unless you understand what you are doing.

Bleeping Computer offers a tutorial with screenshots on using HijackThis you can click on the link below:

How to use HijackThis to remove Browser Hijackers, Malware, & Spyware

wow - thanks for helping me.... The log is below. -it looks scary :tazz: (i should say though that when I did I pressed 'misc' I never got to the screen/button that said update) so I just scanned...
(other questions
-I downloaded the free AVG now and everyso often a horrible siren comes on saying I have a virus - when I try to uninstall AVG free there is an error message and I need to reboot)
-Also when I was in my harddruve I saw a seeral weird looking files ie
(redemtion egf & y among others - should I erase these?
-finally I have spybot / xoftspy / surf accuracy / power scan on my harddrive now => were any of these supposed to be able to erase the viruses it found without paying (ie I think they scanned, found stuff, but didn't erase)

Anyway - thank you SO MUCH for helping me.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com

O18 - Filter: text/html - {3551784B-E99A-474f-B782-3EC814442918} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\qlink32.dll

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Make sure all hidden files and folders are visible (Instructions )
Reboot your computer into safe mode (Instructions)

Find and delete these files and folders (if they are still there):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\qlink32.dl <= this file

C:\Program Files\Hotbar
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc <= this folder
C:\Program Files\Power Scan <= this folder
C:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy <= this folder

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
Close ewido security suite.

Reboot your computer back into normal mode.

Run Panda's online virus scan and perform a full system scan: Panda ActiveScan

Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let us know if any problems persist.

--------------------------------------

Also do this:

Make sure all hidden files and folders are visible (Instructions )

Please go to this site: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
On top you'll find "File to upload and scan".
Browse to the next file, submit it on that site and let it scan:

C:\WINDOWS\spoollv.exe

Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

Thanks so much!!!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!!!

ok - I did everything said...few things
-I rebooted the computer out of safe mode before I ran Ewido file (by mistake), consequently several times my free AVG software said it located 4 files during the Ewido scanning process which I healed...Do I need to do everything again?
-on my c drive I still have : y.exe and redemption =are these anything to worry about.
-I didn't have that spoollv.exe file (last part of your message to scan) in my windows file
-I couldn't figure out how to save the PANDA scan - but it was all negative, ie nothing detected, nothing erased.
-off the files you said to erase, the system 32 one and the hotbar one were not there.

So I think the files you wanted were:
the ewido scan and another hijack scan (which I can't attach so is below), panda scan (I couldn't save)

-I rebooted the computer out of safe mode before I ran Ewido file (by mistake), consequently several times my free AVG software said it located 4 files during the Ewido scanning process which I healed...Do I need to do everything again?

No you don't need to do it again, you did a good job!

finally -> do you know how I can get messenger / and msn not to open automatically on my computer - I think its slowing down my machine too much.

You can fix this entry: O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

----------------------------------------------------

Unzip HJT into it's own permanent folder before doing anything in order for it to create backups. (Not a temporary folder & not on the desktop).
Please create a directory on your c: drive called c:\hijackthis (and download) and unzip hijackthis into that directory. Run the program from that directory from now on. It is essential that you follow these steps or certain important features of the program will not function correctly.

----------------------------------------------------

click Start> Run> type in CMD tap enter. Copy/Paste the following into command prompt:

sc delete spool

At the command prompt: type exit.

Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://us.rd.yahoo.c...//www.yahoo.com
O2 - BHO: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\VERIZO~1\SFP\vzbb.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Verizon Broadband Toolbar - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-D0FC-E57AF4D5FA7D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\VERIZO~1\SFP\vzbb.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: spool - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\spoollv.exe (file missing)

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Make sure all hidden files and folders are visible (Instructions )
Reboot your computer into safe mode (Instructions)

Find and delete this file (if it is still there):
C:\y.exe <= this file

Reboot your computer back into normal mode and post a new HijackThis log,

Let me know if any problems persist.

Thank you thank you thank you for continuing to answer my questions.

The repeated HIJACK log is below (I wasn't able to do the sc delete spool thing), after I ran start Hijack I couldn't find the enter promp...I just did a scan I believe) So I just deleted the files you mentioned - as well as the MSN one you said to fix (I imagine that meant delete - I hope)...If I need to do it again please let me know..

-I believe my computer is working better.... but yesterday, I had to reboot once before it let me run yahoo internet (it first said yahoo not resonding) and today I had to reboot once beause it wouldn't open microsoft word (not resonding) is there anything I can do to fix that?

-also yesterday night I ran the edwino scanner twice - it caught 7 infected files the first time and 5 infected files the second...am I supposed to run the thing daily?

-finally - is there a program you know about to check if my computer is just slow because it is vs. a virus?

-I believe my computer is working better.... but yesterday, I had to reboot once before it let me run yahoo internet (it first said yahoo not resonding) and today I had to reboot once beause it wouldn't open microsoft word (not resonding) is there anything I can do to fix that?

I don't think that is spyware related... don't know what do to about it!

-also yesterday night I ran the edwino scanner twice - it caught 7 infected files the first time and 5 infected files the second...am I supposed to run the thing daily?

Plesae run it till you're clean. you can run it weekly.

-finally - is there a program you know about to check if my computer is just slow because it is vs. a virus?

What do you mean? You're HijackThis log is clean now...

You're welcome:)

This log looks clean!
  • Don't forget to re-hide all files and folders. To re-hide all files and folders:
    • Open My Computer.
    • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    • Select the View Tab.
    • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
    • Check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    • Click Yes to confirm.
    • Click OK.
  • This is a good time to set up protection against further attacks. Read the article behind this link "How did I get infected". If you don't already have them, you need an antivirus that is updated, a good firewall for example Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneLabs Zone Alarm, a spyware blocker like SpywareBlaster and also IE-Spyads and spyware detection (Ad-aware SE and SpyBot S+D). All of these have good free versions available... be very cautious about any security software that advertises in popups or other intrusive ways, they are not only usually useless, but also often have malware in them....

Instead of Internet Explorer, use a different browser like Opera, Mozilla or Firefox.

Last, but not least, you need to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up to date by getting all the latest security patches that protects your computer.

This can be accessed by going to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and following the prompts. You are running Windows XP so get updated to SP-2

Please post back if you are still having any problems....
