[Zoot Mullet]

Hello all,

First off, thank you for providing a free 'service' such as this. It's nice too see how technonlogy can come together to help each other out...

I, too, have the Winfixer/WinAntiSpyware 2005/Traffic Explorer problem. After a while, explorer.exe will be at 99% constantly. Restarting fixes the problem for a while, but it always returns.

I followed the steps on the introductory 'Start Here' page:

Used CleanUp! It cleared 1.1G of space...Wow!

Used Ad-Aware. It only found 1 cookie, which I removed.

Tried to run CWShredder but I get the following error message:
C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\SHYR012J\CWShredder[1].exe is not a valid Win32 application.

(I tried simply running it, as well as saving it to my computer and then trying it, but the same error occurs.)

Used Spybot. All it found was Backweb Lite which it didn't automatically flag. I left those alone.

Used Trojan Hunter. It didn't find anything.

Updated Windows. I have automatic updates turned on. When I did update just now, I downloaded a very small update (if was for Office, if I remember correctly...)

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

• At this point press enter one time.
  
• Next you will see:
  

  Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff

  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfc.dll

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: [color=red]ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please delete this file using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsts.dll


After that, Reboot.

Please rescan with HJT and post a fresh LOG for me here, also run the Activescan again and post that log for me too.It would be helpfull to know how your system is running now as well.

One last thing, the last activescan log showed a reference to Block Checker on your system. have you installed that and then tried to remove it? If you still have it, I strongly recommend its removal. We have a special tool for that which does the job very succesfully, so let me know what you want to do in your next post.

Good morning...

That's funny about your last post...There wasn't a [B]vtsts.dll, just a vtsts.dll file. The date created though was right when I started having problems, so I got rid of it anyway. Thanks for the clarification though!

Also, I realized that my last HiJackThis report was BEFORE I fixed those two items (it was the one automatically saved once it scanned.) I should have run another report after I made the fix and posted that. Anywho, those two files weren't there.

In regards to Block Checker - I did not download that, so your help in removing it would be much appreciated.

As far as my computer goes, I haven't had any pop-ups occur since the fix. But I haven't been on my computer much either. So far so good!

Block checker is not listed in my Add/Remove programs list.

On another note..you wanted me to mention how my computer is doing now. There is something new and different going on...I don't know if it's related or not.

Today when I went to my hotmail account, I noticed I was having trouble typing an email. It'd type a few letters and then the keyboard wouldn't type letters anymore. I could click on my mouse, set the cursor again and type a few more letters, then the problem would return.

I then noticed down at the bottom of my Internet Explorer it said a page was loading. The address would flash for a split second then disappear; about every three seconds this address would appear; along with the green progress bar. Each time it appears it interupts my keystrokes. It only does it when I'm at my hotmail account, and only on Internet Explorer. (I went to my hotmail account with Firefox and the problem doesn't occur.)

Also, if I have two web pages open, the hotmail account page will jump to the front every time this address line shows up.

After watching it over and over again and collecting a few digits at a time here's the web page address:

baym-wm25.webmessenger.msn.com/session/logon.aspx00019 (the rest is hidden)

I can see it appears that a logon page for 'web messenger' is attempting to load. I do have a Messenger account, but it seems this 'web messenger' is something different. (Apparently, with Web Messenger you can use anyone's computer to access your Messenger account without having to load the program...according to a Goggle search I did on it.) Regardless, I haven't knowingly downloaded it/signed up for it - unless it came in on an Windows Update.

Anywho, this problem just started occuring today. Do you have any thoughts on it? I thought that perhaps with the fixes we have done, it threw something outta wack. Maybe this is a temporary thing - I can keep you posted on the next day or so and see it anything changes.

here is the removal tool for the Block Checker, when you post the next log, ill see if there is anything else there.

Download Blockrem from HERE

• Unzip it to its own folder on your desktop.
• Boot your computer to safe mode by rebooting and tapping the F8 button repeatedly until it brings up a boot menu.
  From that menu, select Safe Mode by using the arrow keys to highlight it then pressing enter.
• Once in safe mode open the Blockrem folder on your desktop and double-click blockrem.bat (this is the file with the gear icon) to run it.
• Once it is running please follow the onscreen instructions.
• Reboot and post a HijackThis log.

First off, when I ran my computer in safe mode, the problem I had been having with the Internet Explorer didn't show up. It has not showed up today either, so perhaps it was a one time thing.

That said, I ran the Block Checker fix, but it couldn't find the files??!!? Here's what it said:

Hi There

The BlockCheck remover tool got rid of the registry entry fine, so thats done.

I wouldnt worry about the bargainbuddy entry in the online scan log, as there is no sign of it in the HJT log, which there would have been had you been infected with it. Personally I think both thoses registry hits in the online scan were probably false positives.

Regarding the Webmessenger issue, this is connected with MSN Messenger, and is a recent upgrade I think, however this isnt malware, so I would suggest that the best thing for you to do would be to start a new topic in the Internet and Browsers forum HERE. People more knowledgeable than I on MSN will help you in there.

The final steps below should speed things up considerably on your system. I will leave this topic open for a while, so if you find that you are getting problems in the next few days, just post here and I will pick it up.

Now to the bit I really Like

Congratulations , your log is clean

Just a general clean up now and we are done

Now you have to clean out your temporary files and flush your restore points:

• Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
• Let it scan your system for files to remove.
• Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
• Click "OK" to remove them.
• Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.

Flush System Restore.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

4. Finally Defragment your hard Drive.


So now that your PC is clean, how do you keep it that way?

The single most important measure is this. Keep your copy of XP and all your security apps fully up to date after that,

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer alternatives available. ConsiderFirefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
