Apologies for the re-post, but my original thread was started 5 days ago and was transferred from OS forums, so it looked like it had 8 replies, when in fact I have only got as far as posting the HiJackThis log. So as it stands I would really appreciate someone trawling through it and advising me about the next step!

The story so far:-

I'm looking at a friends system for him which has all sorts of Malware/Spyware etc.

The Active desktop now invites him to "Click here as your PC is infected". He is running Windows ME on a celeron 667mhz PC.

Upon startup it reports that WININET.dll is NOT FOUND.

I can't even access the CD Drives, I have to do a ctrl-Alt-Del to restart it each time as it hangs on this error report.

I did (once) manage to get to the desktop by listing running processes and ending "Explorer". It won't let me access the internet or properly install any programs like Adaware, AVG etc.

I've followed the link which takes me to the "This is the first thing you do" page. I can't GET to the desktop properly. It takes about 30-40 attempts of ctrl-alt-del at exactly the right time, to end "Explorer" via task manager, and then it lets me onto a very "poorly" desktop. I have tried to install AVG & Adaware at this point, but it just flashes up with loads of errors before I get the opportunity to run it. I found a link relating to repairing/replacing the missing .dll and a Microsoft knowledge base recommended a fix (KB890923) which I downloaded on my good PC and transferred to the Win ME machine. Again, it wouldn't load. I'm at a loss as to how to get a HiJackThis log onto the forum as the CD drives don't work either. I have read the log and there are several references to [bleep] sites etc. No surprises as to how it ended up this way, and no sign of any maintainance having been done in the past

2nd Post: I managed to t/f a HiJackthis log to floppy, then to a 3rd pc with a floppy drive & burner, then t/f the log to my good XP machine! Here it is:-
