Hi, I just started using Cox broadband service. I have 2 laptops, both XP. Both worked fine before switching to new service. The one that I am typing on still works fine. I plug directly into the Motorola Surfboard 5120. I unplug, power down modem, plug in other laptop, power up modem, power up laptop. The 1394 adapter and the ethernet adapter connect. But, when I try to open IE, it can't find any web pages. The DHCP server assigns IP address 169.254.166.8, Subnet Mask 255.255.0.0.
~I have run IPCONFIG/RELEASE, IPCONFIG/RENEW - unable to renew IP address.
~I have manually assigned IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DHCP server, & DNS servers - IE still can't load web pages.
~I ran NETSH INT IP RESET - unable to renew IP address.
~Tried unchecking the "Notify me when this connection has limited or no connectivity" - still unable to assign an IP address.
~Disabled firewalls - didn't help.
~Cat5e cable works fine.
~Network Adapter states that it is working properly.
~Ran PING 127.0.0.1 - confirmed that adapter is working properly.
~Ran NETSH INTERFACE IP DELETE ARPCACHE - still unable to renew IP address.
I ran XSPYWARE, which found 2 infections - Martfinder and Twain-Tech. (Which I have not yet removed-don't know how). I then ran XOFTSPY, which found some problems in the registry. (Which I don't know how to fix). Then, a friend of mine turned me on to your website. I followed the instructions for suspected malware. I ran all of the suggested programs. I then tried to connect to the internet, but it still doesn't work. So, I ran Hijack This, here is the log file:
