I have run AdAware, SpyBot, eweido (online and downloaded), the Trend Micro online scan, and still cannot delete "The Best Offers" from my daughter's e-machines Celeron system. How can I get rid of this pest?

Not that whenever Internet Explorer is started, it begins to download files in rapid succession.

Here is the latest hijackthis log. (Is it better to put them in as text or as attached .txt files?)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Ursa and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.
  • Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
  • In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
  • If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Thanks for stepping in to help.

I could not find the pull-down menue for e-mail notification, but I did get an e-mail when you replied.

I uninstalled and deleted HiJackThis, downloaded, installed, and ran a new version from your indicated site. The log is attached below.

As it has become impossible for my daughter to get to her e-mail (on Comcast.net), I have installed and we are now using FireFox.

Thanks again,

1. Please download LQfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-Click LQfix.exe and click Next > Next > Install.
  • Leave the default settings, if you change them, the fix will Fail!
  • Now make sure the "Launch LQfix" box is checked.
  • Click the Finish button, after clicking the Finish button the fix will start.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Your system will now reboot afterwards.
  • Please be patient after the reboot, there is a script running in the background that needs to complete.
2. Now do a scan with HiJackThis and post a new log by using Add Reply

OK Downloaded, installed, and ran LQFix. The system rebooted. Waited a while and ran HiJackThis. Log posted below.

One thing. When the system reboots, a security screen asks permission to run lockx.exe. I always decline both times it asks. However, Task Manager shows that it is running.

1. Please download and run AimFix

2. REBOOT your system

3. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Wow. Thanks again for all the quick replies.

Downloaded, installed, and ran AIMfix as instructed.

No more lockx.exe on reboot or in Task manager processes list

Here's the HiJackThis log file

Best Regards,

(P.S. I have to get my dog's photo in my signature. Like the photo of yours.)

I am preparing a fix that is including the emoval of Spy Spotter 3. It is considered a rogue program. The info can be found here SpywareWarrior.com

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.ezwebsearching.com/sp2.php
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = about:blank
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{EA756889-2338-43DB-8F07-D1CA6FB9C90D} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Rfeoyj] C:\Program Files\Famjsli\Bcqhigo.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vlacope] C:\WINDOWS\vlacope.EXE
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SpySpotter System Defender] C:\Program Files\SpySpotter3\Defender.exe -startup

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\Program Files\Famjsli<==Folder
    C:\WINDOWS\vlacope.EXE
    C:\Program Files\SpySpotter3<==Folder

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

I see no effects of malware. However, The Best Offers is still in the program list in Add/Remove Programs. I have not clicked the Remove button, because that has always taken me to their web site.

I don't think I can continue tonight with the debugging. Have to call it a night.

By the way, I am having trouble refreshing this window so I can see your posts. I am not reading e-mail all the time to see those notices. Any suggestions?

I trust this is not getting repetitive, but thanks so much.

Here is the "uninstallable" program list. Of course, it includes the not-uninstalable "The Best Offers" that started this whole endeavor. Any idea what "PShow" is?

1. I want you to UNINSTALL the following programs through the ADD/REMOVE feature of your Control Panel:

PShow

2. Now, using Windows Explorer, I need you to DELETE the following folder(s) and all their content:

C:\Program Files\PShow

C:\Program Files\The Best Offers

3. REBOOT your system

4. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Well, I knew this was going too well. It had to break sometime.

I went to Control Panel to uninstall PShow. When I clicked on it to bring up the Change/Remove button, it dissappeared. Quicktime, the next program in line was highlighted. Pshow no longer appears on the list, even when I restart Control Panel.

I went to Windows Explorer to look for PShow and The Best Offers. Neither is visible.

What next, chief?
