The screenshot is of a program called registrycleanerxp. somehow it got loaded onto your system. Can you give me a silent runners log.

Will do, hopefully can get it tonight.

You can also go to start>>run>> and type in msconfig and then go to the start-up tab and see if there is an entry there that is checked indicating that program. If it is, please uncheck it.

But I can't run msconfig, I run windows 2000! If I try, it tells me it cannot find the command. And no, there was nothing like that when I used Advanced Uninstaller 2004 Pro to see the start-up processes.

But I can't run msconfig,

Sorry. :tazz: You told me that once before. I keep forgetting to look and see what you're running. Nearly everyone runs xp these days (I still have a 98SE) and sometimes I forget.

You can generate a listing of all the programs that automatically start on your computer. HijackThis has a built in tool that will allow you to do this.

In order to do this go into the Config option when you start HijackThis, and then click on the Misc Tools button at the top. You will then click on the button labeled "Generate StartupList Log". Once you click that button, the program will automatically open up a notepad filled with the Startup items from your computer. Copy and paste these entries into a message and submit it.

DownloadBlacklight to your desktop.
- Double click on blbeta.exe to run the program. Accept the user agreement.
- Leave "Scan through windows explorer" checked.
- Click Scan.
After the scan finishes, click on Next.

BlackLight will create a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log". Please post that log.

Download WinPFind.zipHERE
- Extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.

Open the C:\WinPFind folder and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
(- Add any desire config changes here)
- Click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish.

This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works. When it is done, the results of the scan will be displayed and it will create a log file at C:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt. Pleased copy that log to your next reply.

Hi, coachwife6

I've upgraded most of the hardware on the machine in question (hard disk is still the same) and therefore you might notice some new drivers/software.

The tests you've requested were done and here're the results.

Thank you

Sorry it took so long. You were a real trooper.

Since this topic appears to be resolved, it will now be closed. If you are the topic starter and would like it re-opened, please PM a staff member.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
