The spyware has deleted my games that come with Windows (Solitaire, etc.) It also deleted one of Internet Explorer's files so that when I click the shortcut it searches for it (the file name is Internet Explorer.lnk) but I am able to open Internet Explorer though offline links. It did the same thing with Outlook Express (I fixed this though, it didn't delete the file, just changed the shortcut). It got rid of my connection to my LAN (I fixed this fairly easily also).

I hope this helped some, and I also hope that someone could help me fix these things (Internet Explorer and games).

I'm not sure if the files are still on my computer or not, but I haven't seen anything that would say that they are. I'm just making sure.

Oh and I have read the "Read Before Posting" topic.

A little more about the infection: It changed my wallpaper to advertise their product (spyware removal programs), it kept redirecting me to their website (Through changing my home page and constant warning baloons). I also got a fair amount of pop-ups (online and offline).

Let's see what we can find out without going through any lengthy scans first.

Please download SmitRem.zip

• Save the file to your desktop.
• Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.



Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:

• Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
• Follow the prompts on screen.
• Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
• The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Post the log file from Smitrem as well as a new hijackthis log.

Oh, ya. Do you know how I can get my link to Internet Explorer and my games back?

Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.
Click on Add/Remove Windows components.
Put a check mark next Accessories and Utilities and Internet Explorer

Windows should reinstall both your games and your IE desktop icon.
