This thread was closed to early and I am unable to locate the

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcy.dll

file.

I have done as instructed (per the PM's provided) and removed

C:\WINDOWS\winmodem.exe

without complication.

However the 'gebcy.dll' file is nowhere to be found even via a system wide search.


Please advise.

You should be able to do this after 20 posts and 6 PMs. I wiull provide you with directions and close the PM link.

HOW  TO  USE  WINDOWS  EXPLORER

General:

  • Right Click on the START button

  • Left Click on "Explore"

  • Find "Local Disc C" near the top and scroll down the list of folders under Local  Disc C until you find the first folder that you are looking for.

Specific:
  • Scroll down to the folder called "WINDOWS"

  • Left click on the little cross to the left of the Windows Folder

  • Scroll down the list to the System32 Folder

  • Left click on the system 32 folder and a slew of programs, etc.. appear in the right hand pane.

  • Look for the file you need.

  • Right click on FILE

  • Choose DELETE

  • Proceed the same way for every file.

Program Files
  • Scroll down the list of folders under "c" until you reach Program Files

  • Left click on Program Files and a slew of folders appear to the right.

  • Search for the folder(s) you are looking for.

  • When found, right click on the Folder you found and choose DELETE

  • If it says that it can't delete because of contents, right click on the folder and delete its content one file/folder at a time until it is empty.

  • When empty, DELETE the empty folder itself.

Hello. I understand you are having difficulties understanding directions from one of our Staff members. He has given you EXCELLENT instructions.

Have you enabled the showing of hidden files and folders? If not, that is why you haven't found the file.

To enable:
  • Click Start
  • Double click on “My Computer”
  • Select Tools menu, and click on Folder Options..then click the View tab
  • Under Hidden Files and Folders heading, select “Show hidden files and folders”
  • uncheck the “hide protected operating systems files” options.
  • uncheck the “Hide file extensions for known file types” box
  • Click “yes” to confirm, then click “ok”

Now find and delete the file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcy.dll
Double click on "My computer" Then double click on Windows...then on System32. The gebcy.dll file will be in there. Delete it, then close out of Windows and empty your recycle bin.

Re-hide files and folders:
  • Click Start
  • Double click on “My Computer”
  • Select Tools menu, and click on Folder Options..then click the View tab
  • Under Hidden Files and Folders heading, unselect “Show hidden files and folders”
  • check the “hide protected operating systems files” options.
  • check the “Hide file extensions for known file types” box
  • Click “yes” to confirm, then click “ok”


After you have done this, let me know how you got along. If you cannot find the file still, then it's entirely possible it's not there. I have not read through your other thread, so I don't know what all you have done. If you are still uncertain, I can have you run me a couple of scans so I can see what's up.

Yes he did give me good instructions and yours were excellent also.

I thank you both.


The post you made did the trick and I was able to find the file and delete it.


I don't entirely understand everything I've done but my PC is working much better and hopefully WinFix and VirtuMonde are gone forever.
