Following is my hijackthis log. I have run all the programs suggested. I still have at least one and this is Websearch Toolbar. Yahoo scan shows it but can't get rid of it. Another might be in my hkey reg and this is a legacy file. Will not delete no matter what I do. I have killbot but don't want to try that yet. Also each time I go into internet explorer I show the same malware "virtumonde". It comes back each time. Should I be doing this in safe mode.

Hi sjguppy and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.
  • Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
  • In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
  • If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there
2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

We may be dealing with a double Vundo infection. So if you see popups during and after the fix, don't let it worry you. It is just the other infection taking over from the one we killed. But not for long. :tazz:

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Also note, one must be either logged in under the Administrator account or have administrator privileges to be able to successfully complete these procedures

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please REBOOT your computer into Safe Mode.

You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum
    http://forums.net-integration.net

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll

  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\orqss.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
2. The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

    • O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {827DC836-DD9F-4A68-A602-5812EB50A834} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll
      O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqro - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqro.dll

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
3. Download and install CleanUp!
  • Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
  • Set the program up as follows:
  • Click "Options..."
  • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
  • Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
[*]Click OK
[*]Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
[*]It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.
[/list]4. Please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan
Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

There is a problem with running in safe mode. Not sure why as this is the first time it doesn't work. All I get is a blank screen after I log on. If I hit alt/cont/del the control panel will come up but that is the only thing I can get to work.

Try this:

To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in Safe mode
  • Close all open programs.
  • Click Start > Run.
  • In the Run dialog box, type msconfig and then click OK.
  • In the System Configuration Utility, on the BOOT.INI tab, check /SAFEBOOT.
  • Click OK.
  • When you are asked to restart the computer, click Restart
  • The computer restarts in Safe mode. (This can take several minutes.)
When you are finished working in Safe mode, use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in normal mode.

To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP in normal mode
  • Finish what you need to do in Safe mode.
  • In the section "To use the System Configuration Utility to start Windows XP" above, repeat steps 1-3 (inclusively).
  • But in step 4, uncheck /SAFEBOOT.
  • Close all programs, and restart the computer.

I was able to get around it by using the task manager and running a task. After I did the vundo fix I went back and was able to get into safe mode with no problem. This may have been one of my issues. Also the clean program was able to get rid of almost 10k of temp and misc garbage. Something that I couldn't do before no matter what I tried.

I still have some problems that I can see. I have purityscan still shwoing up. Sometimes it shows as !update.exe and keep showing up in the temp files. Also, there is websearch toolbar which also wont go away. Tried the yahoo scan but it won't allow me to delete it. I went into regedit and same problem. I can't delete it. I do have killbot but don't want to try that until other options are gone.
Also winfix just popped up again when I opened windows explorer. I thought this was gone but back again.

Also, below shows RDSO/eetu. I think this is some type of hijacker and have tried to get rid of it before and it always comes back.

Did not do ActiveScan. for some reason it would not download to my machine.
here is my hijack log.

OK Rick, there is probably another copy of the Vundo trojan on your computer which is causing the popup but it hasn't fully declared itself yet. I see parts forming. (It's true, :tazz: ) So while we wait, and you can get into Safe Mode, we will start the rest of the cleanup and that Vundo thingee will eventually show all its parts and we will go after it then.

1. Update your Ewido definitions.

2. REBOOT into Safe Mode

3. Run EWIDO

4. Save the log

5. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

6. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review along with your Ewido log.

Regards,

Trevuren

Websearch toolbar is inbedded in my registry. I found it and tried deleting it in safe mode but it will not delete. Any ideas how to get rid of this one. I do have killbox but want to wait until you check all other ways.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F9F879E0-9009-BCD1-7521-9B5B245A6095} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xvwgmplv.dll
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Cnhciijm] C:\WINDOWS\system32\r?ndll.exe

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\r?ndll.exe<==Be careful for there is a valid rundll32.exe in that folder
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xvwgmplv.dll

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

I didn't do the deletes in safe mode. I couldn't find the two files.

I still have websearch toolbar inbedded in my registry. It still shows up each time i run yahoo anti virus. I will not allow itself to be deleted.

Please Download the following tool to assist us in removing this infection!
  • Download WinPFind
    • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
    • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
    • Dont do anything with it yet!
  • Reboot into Safe Mode

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

  • Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
    • Click "Start Scan"
    • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
    • Once the Scan is Complete
    • Go to the WinPFind folder
    • Locate WinPFind.txt
    • Place those results in the next post!
  • Reboot back to Normal Mode!

Regards,

Trevuren

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

1. I do not find any evidence of this "WenSearch ToolBar" in your registry. It may be a false positive on the part of your antivirus software.

2. Please run your Antivirus again and note ALL the information on what it finds about that item. I mean ALL.

3. Also, as a precautionary measure, please go to the following site and let the program scan all your system and provide me with a written report of its findings:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information into your next post.
Regards

I am able to find the websearch toolbar in my registry still. it has the following detail (websearch toolbar support NT service). does this mean it might be ok to have and my yahoo scan just mistakes it for a trojan.

Finally, for some reason I could not downloand the last scan you wanted me to try.
