Hi,
I've got a WinXP Professional Service pack2 system.
The machine is a P4 3.0ghz With 1024 mb RAM on a ASUS P4P8X.
The system is connected 24 hours a day.
Yesterday it started to behave in a strange way: slow connection, suspect pop-ups...
I suddenly unplugged the modem, run a scan with NORTON andPestPatrol; only PP found 1 ad-ware: Puper-D Trojan on the file "intmonp.exe" but PP was not able to eliminate it).
Then i rebooted WINXP in safe mode and manually deleted that file and other files connected with it (as i found on a security bullettin on the web).
I rebooted the system but still had problems...
At the reboot my ADSL connection was cleared and substituted with a dial-up one.
At this point I found this site.
I followed all the instructions in the "Start here" post (downloaded all the utilities, run them, eliminated something like 60 viruses and trojans....)
Neverthless I still have same problems: some viruses couldn't be eliminated...
My network is still down, MS Office says it is not correctly installed and many other things like that.
Here's my HJTHIS log, please help me!

Welcome to GTG.

I suggest taking out your email at the bottom there. There are spambots lurking in public forums...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{1E432263-6841-4653-8F02-366A2F77E339} - (no file)

Do you recognize this IP below (85.255.113.131)? If you don't recognize it, then fix it in HijackThis also:

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{4A7D1A25-051A-4015-96CF-86E6ADDC4F3E}: NameServer = 85.255.113.131,85.255.112.20

O23 - Service: Windows Automatic Updates - Stanford University - C:\WINDOWS\system32\windowsautomaticupdates.exe

Delete this file if found:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\windowsautomaticupdates.exe

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop (or Appearance)->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for HijackThis, smitfiles.txt and Ewido.

Hi man,
thanks for helping!
I suddently took out my mail adress from the signature.....
I'm performing the required fixes, but it will take long because complete scans are very slow.
The IP adress you wrote in red is THE PROBLEM: something has changed my DNSs (I'm on a LAN) with that adress, i phoned to the DSL provider and they told me that these new DNSs were wrong and they gave me the rigth ones.
I fixed the registry entries with HJT.
Now i'm performing the ewido scan in safe mode but the problem seems to be different: I did this scan a milion times and it always find out the same things:
trojandownloader.agent.uj in memory and in the system restore directory.
I cleaned up the system restore directory (disabled system restore and rebooted) but the trojan is still there...
I downloaded the blacklight tool from F-Secure site ( http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/ ) to check the rootkits and i foud at least two suspect processes:
- C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hwiper.exe --> I'm quite sure this is a bad process
- C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\csual.exe --> I've done a second check wit blacklight and this file changed in csiqk.exe

I wanted you to know this things to make you aware of everything i've done.
I will reply later with all the logs required.
Thank you,
Claudio.

No problem Claudio. Fix those in Ewido and then run the fix for HijackThis.

When you are done, restart and give me the log for Ewido and a new log for HijackThis.

To me it seems all right eccept for the trojan downloader agent resident in memory.
What to do about it?
Claudio.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

Restart and boot into Safe Mode. Run Ewido scan again. Save the report.

Restart to go back to Normal Mode. Give me the Ewido log.

Ok done.
Here's the new ewido log:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido security suite - Rapporto Scansione
---------------------------------------------------------

+ Creato il: 4.36.07, 05/10/2005
+ Report-Checksum: 7CB7371

+ Risultati scansione:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\csfcq.exe -> TrojanDownloader.Agent.uj : Pulito con Backup
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmtjz.exe -> Trojan.Small.fb : Pulito con Backup

::Fine Rapporto

I think we drove out this executables and finally ewido killed them!
They were exactly the executables I found using BlackLight.
I did another scan with ewido and now everything is clear.
Thank you very much for the support.
Claudio.
