Please Help! :tazz:

I am running:

AOpen AX4SPE-N Motherboard
Intel Pentium IV 2.4GHz Processor (not overclocked)
Dual 512 MB PC3200 DDR 400 MHz FSB
OS is Windows Me 4.90.300 with all critical updates current.

I have been fighting an issue with low resources, insufficient memory and processor overload for months now. When I boot, I start out somewhat OK, and available resources quickly erodes as I run things. For example, as I write this, system and user resources are shown at 16% each with GDI at 25%, and all I have open is two browser windows. To get this performance, I have to go into msconfig, and shut down all but the most essential start processes. Even so, I still eventually lock up if I don't reboot after a while. I have tried a variety of things.

This system should scream, but only whimpers. I have run a variety of spyware, adware, and trojan removal programs recommended in the 'read this before you post' posting in addition to several others. I have scanned for viruses with PC-Cillin, Norton Anti-Virus, and Panda. As a result, I have removed a lot of stuff from my computer, and seen some slight improvement, but not a fix.

One other thing that I've noticed is that 2 or 3 files keep getting created in my root directory. They don't have names, per se, but rather machine code symbols for names. They are like 'the files formerly known as Prince'. If I delete them, they come back named with different symbols. They show 0 kb in size, and when I try to read them with a text editor, they appear totally empty. There is also a file named W9XUNDO.DAT that is 1,074,832 KB in size that I can't copy anywhere without freezing up the system. Virus scans of this file show it to be clean, but the size seems very suspicious to me. There is also a file called W9XUNDO.INI that is 505 KB that appears to be associated with it. It shows that it was created on 12/22/2004, which roughly correlates with when I re-installed my Windows Me OS, so it might be OK, but I thought that I'd mention it.

I might be missing something subtle below, but it looks clean to me. I at least thought that I'd get either concurrence from an expert that it is clean, or have someone try to find something that I'd missed before I start looking from a hardware side.

Hi michaelk87

Both these file are part of ME W9XUNDO.DAT and W9XUNDO.INI more if can be found

mprexe.exe is a process which is initiated by Microsoft Windows 9x and ME only. It allows the computer to use multiple network protocols, and network adapters by routing between both. This hidden process will only appear in the Windows task list should there be a problem with it. Otherwise it should be left enabled.

Added by the OPASERV.T WORM! Note - this is not the legitimate Mprexe.exe system file More info can be found HERE

Lets play safe
Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and we'll remove what's left.

As you've requested, I've run housecall again, rebooted, and re-run hijackthis. The log is shown below.

In the interest of learning, I have some questions:

Why re-run housecall? This makes the fourth time that I've run this.

Why do you suspect OPASERV.T WORM, or that the problem is related to Mprexe.exe? Do you know or are you guessing?

Housecall has indicated that my system is clean of viruses. If it is aware of the pattern for OPASERV.T WORM, and didn't find it, then why are we still hunting for it?

Here is the HijackThis log:

Hi michaelk87

1) Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

2) Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. ;)

I've performed the fixes that you suggested and re-run HJT. I am not seeing any performance improvements, in fact, possibly a little worse. To disable non-essential start-up processes for resource conservation, I actually had to run msconfig from safemode because the available resources in normal mode were not enough to allow me to run it.

The new log follows:

With this my system resources are 34%, my user resources are 34%, and GDI resources are at 60%.

I am running a Radeon 9200 Graphics card with 128 MB inboard. Could this be robbing my system?

I also notice that I have 3 new files in my root directory. They are@@@, X, and n. I know from experience that if I delete these, three more will eventually show up with new names, but the names are always different, and not with a standard character set. This has me very suspicious also.

BTW - I really appreciate your prompt replies, so far, as this whole issue has been very frustrating for me.

Hi

Using taskmanager you will find that norton is taking most of your resources

It may be better to add more memory to inprove your speed and free up more resources

As for your Radeon 9200 Graphics card with 128 MB inboard. Could this be robbing my system no this is helping your systems speed

Per Symantec, Norton Internet Security only requires 96 MB of RAM and 130 MHz Processor. I'm already running 1 GB of RAM, and Pentium IV 2.4 GHz Processor. I don't see adding more RAM or horsepower to be the answer.

Also, I'm not sure I see your response about my Radeon card. It doesn't look like you completed your thought in your response.

I ran shredder yesterday before my first post. Found nothing. . . as well as spyerase, winpatrol, spysweeper, spybot, panda,...

I have a post on the AOpen forum to see if anyone has any similar problems with my motherboard and Windows Me. Maybe it isn't smart enough to manage the resources in this system.

BTW - you sleep much? It has to be after 3 AM for most other Man United fans at the time of your last post! (If you are from where I think you are). :tazz:

Hello,

Thought you had given up on me! :tazz: Almost called PlumChoice.

I'm at work now, so can't tell you yet what version CWShredder I have, but I'm anal enough that I would have gotten updates if available. Also anal enough to check again when I get home, to be certain, and will forward info. I'll dl and run the zip file you recommended, as well, this evening when I get home.

I not sure that I understand what you meant by:

"Elite Side Search Bar COOLWEBSEARCH this is what we removed "

Are you trying to say that those two lines are evidence that Coolwebsearch was running?

Hi michaelk87

How to use Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in

- Close Ad-Aware 6 build 181 and Ad-Watch (if running)
- Download the free VX2 Cleaner at http://updates.ls-se...lvx2cleaner.exe
- Install the VX2 Cleaner
- Start Ad-Aware 6 build 181
- Go to "Plug-ins"
- Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click "Run Plugin"
- If your computer isn't infected, click "Close".

If your computer is infected

- Select "Clean system"
- Reboot your computer
- Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
- Remove any VX2 objects detected
- Reboot your computer again
- Run a second scan to make sure the files have been removed from your computer

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working. smile.gif
