Hi and thank you for looking.
I am running windows xp sp2 on a dell computer and I started having problems about three days ago with winsupdater, my pc is super slow and I could not use regedit or task manager. I was doing a research on the forums and found some steps to delete this file and I did ( I think ). I am running hijackthis and I still get the file were is says winsupdater. here is my hijackthis report. Please let me know what to do to get rid of this problem thank you

HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

• Run HijackThis
  
• Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  
• POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

I hope this helps. I tryed unistalling the hjt from my add/remove but it said that hjt was alredy removed and then it just took the name from the list of programs, so i think is gone. I have this file that is on c:\windows\prefetch that i did not removed when I unistalled the other version, so now that I have installed the new version and did a scan and saved the log I went and looked at the c:\windows\prefetch folder and I have two hjt files here are the names for them
HIJACKTHIS.EXE-0FDAF2E1.pf
HIJACKTHIS.EXE-38B700D0.pf
HJTSETUP[1].EXE-2F5351EF.pf
don't now if this would help in any way but i thought i should mention them.

Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.

• Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
• You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
• Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • REBOOT into Safe Mode
  • Run EWIDO
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
  • While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
• Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

Make double sure to disable Spybot's Tea Timer for now, as it can interfere with the fixing of problems.

Open Spybot and and make sure you are in Advanced mode (check it in the 'Mode' menu). Go to the Tools section and click resident and then uncheck the box for Tea Timer.

Then, REBOOT

Here is the new hjt log. I did find the C:\Program Files\winsupdater folder and I deleted it. I could not find the winlog.exe file When I typed C:\Program Files\winsupdater[/B] the explorer bar did not find anything, but I removed the [/B] and found the empty folder so thats what i deleted.

Please make sure that all files are showing (I'm going to bed)

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

• First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
  
  • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
  • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
  • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with ok
• Please RUN HijackThis.
  . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  
  
• Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:
  
  O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [] winlog.exe
  
  
• Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
  
  
• Reboot Your System in Safe Mode
  
  How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
  
  
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
• Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):
  
  winlog.exe
  
  
• Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE
  
  
• Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

If by chance, you still can't find winlog.exe and it reaapears in your HJT log after the fix, please do the following:

Please Download the following tool to assist us in removing this infection!

• Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!
• Reboot into Safe Mode
  
  Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  
  
• Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!
• Reboot back to Normal Mode!

I have no idea what this trojan does. You may want to check by "Googling" the name and following some of the limks. When you find the real name to the trojan, go to one of the anti malware sites, like Panda, Symantec or McAfee and look it up.

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

• Click Start. Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
• Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
• Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
• Left click on "System Restore Tab"
• Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
• Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

• Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
• Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
