Desktop infected - cannot get control over it [RESOLVED]

I had a SpySheriff infection which I have removed. I have gone through all the preliminary scan etc. that you suggest. I guess I'm virus free now. However, I still have that annoying splashsceen / Desktop image of their stupid 'Computer Error' Warning showing. I don't seem to be able to fix it and cannot find any articles on your site with similar problems who's 'fix' I could apply. I can attach my 'HijackThis' scan log file, which I have just produced. Also I do not have control over the Desktop Background in Display Properties. Help resolving this anoyance would be fantastic. I believe I have approached this problem from the tail end rather than coming to you first - I set about 'other' fixes to remove the SpyShieriff - which appear to have worked fine. I just need to close out this last aspect (I think).

1. Go to Geeks to Go
. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window. (make sure you have signed in first)
. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

1. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

2. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time. DO NOT UPGRADE TO SP2 AT THIS TIME
  • Click HERE for the update.
  • Apply the update.
  • REBOOT YOUR SYSTEM
  • Post a fresh Hijack This log

Hi Trevuren, I'll get to this as soon as I can, however I have an Operating System issue to overcome first. I am unable to download SP1a because my Product Key is coming up as Invalid! I recently had maintenace and upgrade work done to my ageing Compaq Presario 5BW120 C/600/E UK PC Machine - which entailed raising the RAM further (to 512MB) Installing a Pentium 3 1GHz CPU and a new 80GB HD (keeping the original 12GB as F: and G: drives). When the engineer carried this out he was worried (by evidence) that we may have been about to lose the original drive (complete crash) so rather than get into that (and recover the XP Home (legitimate copy / upgrade) that I was running) he choose to install his copy of XP Professional (I was a little concerned but he told me this was OK). I will be going back to him in the morning to sort this thorny issue out. Not least because of this issue, but also I experience problems in Internet Explorer - when the error report comes back from Microsoft it tells me the cure lies with upgrading to SP2. Clearly I cannot do that in any case, but also cannot until the first issue is dealt with.

When I have this sorted out I'll be back - hopefully this will not take me too long.

Is it worth me doing what you advised kevinrawlin (member 126,212) to do yesterday (04/05 Oct 2005)

ie. He seemed to have the same (similar) problem as me (regarding the Desktop). I know I have other issues also - which need attending to - but would not the advice you gave him clean my desktop (and get control of it back to me)? - Or, am I 'barking' up the wrong tree !? :) ps: My system is protected by Norton Firewall; monitored (and cleaned etc.) by Norton Anti-virus and also (although maybe I should not allow it simultaniously) SpyBouncer (Browser and Registry).

2. Try this for your desktop:

Right click on http://www.greyknigh...pairDesktop.reg and download that file. Double click on it and click on Yes when it asks you if you want to merge it into the registry. Once that's done, restart your computer.

Login as usual and now right click on your Desktop and go to Properties. Next go to Desktop tab->Customize Desktop button->Web tab. Uncheck everything listed there. Then delete all the entries listed except for 'My Current Home Page'. Click OK and OK.

Yea, I understand - that's cool - I'll get right to it. I wasn't happy when the engineer suggested it - I foresaw problems. I think maybe he did not fully appreciate the extent of the problems he could be causing me. I will make sure he's aware of them now. If the worst happens I'll buy my way out of it by going XP Pro legitimately - that is if I cannot restore my prior (legit.) XP Home edition - which is still on my F:, but due to jumper setting etc. I now boot from the 'new' C:. One way or another, I'll get it back to how it used to be (ie Legit. and up-to-date with crital updates etc.) (Although this time I will go the whole hog and go to XP Pro). Any advice on Opera as a Browser?
