IE Browser lock up /cxtpls?

Last week my browser (IE 5.5) went weird. My MSN toolbar would not drop down, on certain websites (ex. Google) would not even open, when I went to open my hotmail acct. it would lock up when I entered my password, the entire browser ran slow. I could not get into any MSN groups to log in any messages (seeking advice). I had McAfee antivirus installed but it would lock up too.
What is the problem??? Is it my computer? Windows? MSN browser or something else??
