Serious! - cannot get rid of winfixer(geeda.dll) [RESOLVED]

Hi, I had trouble with Winfixer. Long story short, the geeda.dll (running in the winlogon.exe process) was the problem and I was instructed on how to go about getting rid of it with VundoFix and HijackThis at this forum: http://forum.tweakxp...76722-29-1.aspx Reading my last entery may be enough to understand my current problem. Whe I follow the directions in safe mode or regular mode: using vundo fix then hijack this to delete the files then reboot, I get my desktop background, no taskbar and cannot open task manager. When I go back to safe mode, it seems to work alright but I have to do a system restore to before I delete teh geeda.dll in order to run my computer in regular mode. I'm really hoping that someone here can help me.... Is there no way to fix this problem without havign to wipe my HD and reinstall the OS?????? Any help or suggestions are MUCH appreciated. Thanks.

Strange...that should have worked. Let's try this again:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\geeda.dll

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\adeeg.*
* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
* In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\geeda.dll
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {40D41A8B-D79B-43d7-99A7-9EE0F344C385} - (no file)

Delete these if found:

* After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
* Pressing any key will cause a 'Blue Screen of Death' this is normal, do not worry!
* Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp! http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click 'Options...'
Move the arrow down to 'Custom CleanUp!'
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I followed your directions and now my computer won't start in regular mode at all, Even when I try to run a system restore to before I deleted with vundofix( which seemed to work in my previous attemps) Does this ahve anything to do with the viewpoint thing you had me delete????? I'm on my roomate's computer since mine is unusable in safe mode...... PLEASE, PLEASE, is there anyway you can help or at least grant me the ability to run in regular mode even with the geeda.dll (like i was able to before)????????????????????????

No, removing Viewpoint should not have any impact on this. Nothing I asked you to fix there should have done this....but knowing spyware, anything can happen as well. Can you run HijackThis and save the log on a floppy disk? Then move it to a computer that can go online and post it here? Can't you go online using Safe Mode with Networking option?

Since you have it installed, run Ewido in Safe Mode. Save the report on a floppy disk and post it here from another computer if you still can't go online.

wierd....I was running a disk check from safe mode then I got your message. I rebooted my comp. into safe mode before the check was done and now it just stops on the screen which displays the various drivers as they load.

Is this Safe Mode you are trying to boot to now? Normal Mode still won't work?

If you still have problems, insert your XP CD and boot from it. Let it load to the blue setup screen. Then choose the option to Repair Windows. See if that will bring you back to speed...

I won't lose anything on my HD will I? it will just fix it? When I try to repair, it says "type administrator password" C:\WINDOWS>
What is it talking about, I dont have any password. when I press enter it just repeats every line:C:\WINDOWS>
Wait, do I type "FIXBOOT"????

It shouldn't affect your data..., but no guarantees just like everything else. You should backup regularly anyway, but running it shouldn't delete any of your data.

Don't you have a password for the Administrator account? You need to type that in. This should be the Administrator account that you login with in Safe Mode.

well, I guess I dont need an account since I pressed enter and it prompted me to select the kind of fix I wanted. I typed FIXBOOT and it created something.... but it did not fix teh problem. I ran a diagnostic from my dell resource CD but Ig uess that only checks hardware. I tried running a repair from the XP CD again and it freezes at teh menu where it gives me the repair, exit or install option.... If/when I am able to get into repair, which should I do? When I type "HELP" It gives me a list of all the commands for repairing different parts... Which should I do? Thanks.

Edit: I searched online and found some directions for a repair. Apparently you choose the install XP rather than the repair with recovey wizard (which I was trying). I'll have to try It later since I set my computer to run a disk check on start up and I guess it keeps running a disk check every start up until it actually completes one). Aahhh, my apologies for that. Yes, you are correct. You have to enter setup first and then choose to do the repair.

Well, when it was intalling the new components for XP, I got a blue screen that said it needed to shut down XP. It went something like this: BAD_POOL_CALLER check to make sure that hardware is properly installed. Dissable or remove newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options suck as caching or shadowing. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x000000CL (0x00000007, 0x00000CD4, 0x00340045, 0xEA11c).......I don't know what to do, my safe mode wont work and it keeps doing a disk check that I can't skip.....

Go into your BIOS and look for an option to disable the memory caching and shadowing. Save and exit. See if that will get rid of the errors.

If anything, post in the Windows Forum and request for help on this STOP message you got. Tell them about the Disable memory caching and shadowing message...

I just restarted, allowed the disk check to finnish which allowed the installation of the XP repair files and my computer returned to normal!!!!!!!!! Although I may have reverted back to SP1 but all my files were saved!!!!!!!! thank you so much. I am eternally grateful! Here's my new HLT log, I think you'll find most everything in order. :tazz:

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
