malware i think? [RESOLVED]

hi,
I recently installed xp, recently i started having a little problem, after a couple of mins i cannot get online, my internet connection is working fine but i cannot sign into any of the messenger programs and internet explorer says the page cannot b displayed ive ran ad aware, micorsoft antispyware, avg and gotten rid of whatever theyve found, so far nothing has helped.if someone could it would be much appreciated.

Welcome to Geeks to go

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1.
Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

2.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Reboot into safe mode. Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
  • Open Ewido
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin. Do not open any windows for the duration of the scan.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

3.
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Please delete this file using Windows Explorer(if present):
Use windows search facility if you have trouble finding these files.

After that, Reboot.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :)

Hi demonicangel

Are you using msconfig to stop programs starting with windows? if so could you re-enable them and post a fresh log, unless you know what they are and are sure they are safe.

well so far everything seems to working fine, about the startup programs im not sure which ones i should stop at startup, any suggestions?? ooo and thanx for helping with the previous problem.

If you are not currently stopping any programs, you should leave the startup as it is.
I see you have limewire on your machine, we do not recommend the use of p2p programs as malware and viruses are easily passed through these networks. I believe you can remove it via add/remove programs should you decide to stop using it.

Other than that your log apears to be clean :)

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
  • Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
  • Weather Watcher - Free taskbar weather program that is free, malware free, and resource light.
