Application Layer Gateway Service - error message

When I try to use FTP-protocol in Windows XP I get an error message which tells that Application Layer Gateway Service (alg.exe) has errors and it must be closes. Then I have the choice to send an error report or not.
After that the FTP services don't work.

I have tried several different clients like WS FTP-LE, Internet Explorer's integrated ftp client and Atom FTP.

With every program I get the same message.

What might be the problem?
