Hi, this is my first time posting so sorry if I make any mistakes and stuff.

Problem: I'm starting to get pop-ups from winfixer and winantispyware and my computer is getting slower and slower. I've downloaded and ran all the spyware/malware removal programs that you guys have recommended but the pop-ups are still coming back. Programs would just freeze sometimes.

So this is my Ewido Report:

---------------------------------------------------------
ewido security suite - Scan report

+ Created on: 7:18:57 PM, 10/7/2005
+ Report-Checksum: 81D62A5D

+ Scan result:

C:\Documents and Settings\lisa\Cookies\lisa@2o7[2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.2o7 : Cleaned with backup
C:\Documents and Settings\lisa\Cookies\lisa@tribalfusion[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Tribalfusion : Cleaned with backup

::Report End

This is my HijackThis Log: (I don't know when's the best time to scan and take a log but this is after I ran the scans and cleared the stuff. Also, I'm not running some of the programs that I usually run like AIM etc.)

So I just have a few more questions/concerns:
1. When I first downloaded HijackThis, I forgot to save it to its own folder/file so I clicked "open" instead of "save." So it gave me a warning message saying that I should move the program or it wouldn't be able to backup my files. But I tried searching for the program and I couldn't find it (this is probably due to my incompetence...) so I downloaded HijackThis again and saved it to a place and used this HijackThis to generate the log above. Would having the two HijackThis affect anything...like do I need to go and delete the first HijackThis?

2. My laptop is partitioned into a C and D drive right now. I have all my important things in the D drive whereas all my programs and stuff are on C drive...so I was wondering if I should burn all the stuff on my D drive just in case or is that completely unnecessary?

If anyone can help, I'd really really appreciate it!! Thank you!

Hi rsmcharmlys and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

2. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
  • POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Regards,

Trevuren

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Also note, one must be either logged in under the Administrator account or have administrator privileges to be able to successfully complete these procedures

1. Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please REBOOT your computer into Safe Mode.

You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
    it should look like this

    VundoFix V2.1 by Atri
By pressing enter you agree that you are using this at your own risk
Please seek assistance at one of the following forums:
    http://www.atribune.org/forums
    http://www.247fixes.com/forums
    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum
    http://forums.net-integration.net

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

I downloaded vundofix to my desktop and extracted the files. But after I restarted my computer in safe mode, all that would come up is a black screen with "safe mode" at the four corners of the screen. It also says what system I'm using such as "Windows XP...." on the top of the screen...and nothing else would come up.

I would restart my computer and press F8 to get to the "Advanced options menu" which lists for me the following options:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable boot logging
Enable VGA Mode
Last Known Good Configuration
Directory Services Restore Mode
Debugging Mode

Start Windows normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu

So I would select "Safe Mode" and then a list of things that start with "multi(0)disk(0)" would scroll down the screen and then I was taken to my usual Windows password screen. Here, I'm given the choice of picking either the Administrator account or my own account. (I think I have administrator rights for my own account...but I can't be sure so should I just log into administrator account next time when I'm using the VundoFix?) But anyway, I tried logging in under safe mode into both accounts and I got the same problem, which is just a black screen with the words "safe mode" in gray written at each of the four corners of the screen. On the top of the screen, it says "Microsoft ® Windows XP ® (Build 2600.xpspl.020828-1920: Service Pack 1)"

From there, I would have no other options other than to shut down or restart. I couldn't click on anything and after the black screen shows up, the computer would be finished processing...so it doesn't seem to be loading up anything more.

I tried "safe mode with command prompt" and that just took me to the black screen and on top of that screen, there's the DOS command prompt screen, where you have to type in the commands such as "c:\..."

1. From there, try to nagigate to : C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop (Folder)and run the program from there.

2. If that doesn't work, try the Safe Mode Option with Networking

So during safe mode while I was checking off the things that needed to be fixed on the HJT log, two of the files (02-BHO: (no name) - {549...} and the 020 one) had "file not found" stated in parenthesis next to their names. I don't know if that's what's supposed to happen...So after I exited out of HJT and pressed enter, the command box said something about VundoFix or KillVundo not working or can't find a file (Sorry, I'm really not sure about exactly what it said because it flashed by too fast)...and instead of the "blue screen of death," the screen just turned black and the computer rebooted. So maybe that's what's supposed to happen?

Also, the active scan says I have two spyware..I don't know if that's still the winfixer or winantispyware....or if these detected two will even affect my computer. Anyway, so hopefully, my log is clean now....

A. Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

Note:In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Select
    • "Delete on Reboot".
    • "End Explorer Shell While Killing File"
  • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\byvsp.dll

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

B.
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O16 - DPF: {205FF73B-CA67-11D5-99DD-444553540012} (CInstall Class) - http://www.funnytaf....ler/Install.cab
    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...ip/RdxIE601.cab

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.
Regards,

Trevuren

As of now, there doesn't seem to be more malware problems...I haven't really used my computer all that much since I cleaned it of spyware so I guess I'll just try it out and cross my fingers, hoping that no new problems come out. Thank you sooo much for all your help and your fast responses!! You were such an awesome help!

I just have one last question...Can I delete the Killbox and VundoFix now? Or would that not be a good idea?

Thanks again!!

Yes you can delete both files

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:
  • Click Start. Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
  • Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
  • Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)
