Most of my time i live in the relatively secure world of my Mac... however, i work in a Windows world and at present an trying to help a work mate out by cleaning up his home system but have encountered a stuborn case of CoolWebSearch!!!

Ran through the recommended fixes... AdAware, Spy-Bot, CWShredder, Ewido, updated all to latest along with Windows update etc ... but still CWS still shows up when i rerun AdAw and SBS&D...

Here's my latest hjt log after which running AdAw and SBS&D CoolWebSearch still show up!?!?!? Any help greatly appriciated...

Hi ,

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Please visit Panda and do an online scan. Save the scan report.

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from here:
http://www.webroot.c...6d6f87b866d2848
(It's a 2 week trial)

Click the "Free Trial" link on the right - next to "SpySweeper for Home Computers".
On the next page, click the "Free Trial" button.
Download it and install it.
When you open the program, it will prompt you to update to the latest definitions.
Please do so, then click "Sweep Now"
Then click the "Start" button.
When it's done scanning, click the "Next" button.
Remove everything it finds, then save the log - copy the log and paste it here for me.

Delete the following files and folders, if found -

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Security Troubleshoting.url
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\commands.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ot.ico
C:\WINDOWS\deskbar.ini

folders
C:\PROGRAM FILES\linksw

we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

Hi Tampabelle...
The saga continues!?... Firstly, the link to the About:Buster .ZIP file in the post didn't seem to work... after downloading the file and attempting to unzip it i got the following error:

Compress (zipped) folder is either invalid or corrupt

I 'Googled' about until i found another link to the About:Buster zip file and downloaded it again... this time it decompressed fine and i was able to run About:Buster.exe but when i went to update i got another error:

Run time error '5'
Invalid procedure call or argument

So, i'm stomped for the moment!? :tazz: Any idea?

Cheers,

John~0

Hi Again... ?:woot:

Well, i kept getting that Run time error message come up trying to run/update AboutBuster... Did get it to run once in Safe Mode but then obviously, couldn't perform the update so i'm not that hopeful that it has solved anything...

Followed the other steps any way and did a Kaspersky online scan...

Here's the reports but as i say, i'm not sure they're worth anything at this stage...

Any other options here?

For what it's worth... after running through the previous, i booted regular and ran AdAware and came up with CWS again!?!?! I then booted safe, ran MS AntiSpyware beta, plus SpyBot (both came up clean)... then ran AdAw and again CWS showed up... rebooted safe and ran AdAw again and again CWS showed up!?!? If i re-run AdAw without rebooting still CWS shows up!?!

I'm getting very close to a reformat and reinstall... ~:) Either that or maybe i should just not run AdAw again!!! :tazz:

Hi,

I am giving you the fix again. Please note that About Buster has been revised to its latest version (different from the one you have).

Hey again,

Thanks for sticking at this... i hope my friend Dave appreciates the time and efforts that's going into this on an international level!?!?

btw AboutBuster ran fine this time around but didn't show anything in the report... i haven't ran AdAw again yet but i'm suspecting the the instance of CWS is still there...

Here are the reports/logs

Cheers,

John

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.admin2cash.biz
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.finefind.nettraffic2cash.biz
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.private-dialer.biz
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.private-iframe.biz

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Download DelDomains.inf.

Right click on it and then click on Install.

Reboot the PC.

Now run Ad Aware and check if it throws up anything. It it does, then post back the Ad Aware log.
