Hi, I've been working on my boyfriend's computer for a couple of weeks now. It was a mess. It started with doing this thing where when you first start up, the desktop would load fine, but the screen would flicker every several seconds of being on, and then any program/folder/etc. that was opened would be closed.

I was able to run a few things in safe mode and clean it up enough to get it to work and (sometimes) start up normally. I finally was able to connect to the Internet & downloaded most of the clean up utilities on the forum "Start Here" page. So I've now ran AdAware, SpyBot, Ewido and AVG several times now, and it seems like each time, they find some new infection.

Well, I've been working on it about all day today, and I just ran the AVG antivirus twice, and the second time it came up completely clean. I think if I were to restart however, there may be more.

One odd thing that still happens is that IE (his original browser, which I've since then got him FireFox) the default homepage always changes to "about:blank". I've tried changing the homepage several times, but it always seems to go back to that.

This isn't that big of a deal since he has FireFox. But a lot of the online scanners like no Trend Micro, need IE to run on. And sometimes if I tried to run those, the error message would come up asking to shut it down.

Any suggestions?

• First we must STOP, and Disable a bad Added Service
  • Click Start>Run and type in: services.msc
  • Click OK
  • In the Services window find: Network Security Service
  • Select/highlight and right click the entry, and choose: Properties
  • On the General tab, under Service Status click the Stop button
  • Beside: Startup Type, in the drop menu, select: Disabled
  • Click Apply, then OK
• Download CWShredder
  Click check for updates. Do not use it yet.
  
  
• Please download AboutBuster from the attachment to this post.
  • Create a folder on your desktop and call it AboutBuster
  • UNZIP the AboutBuster.zip file and extract all files to this newly created AboutBUster Folder
  • Do NOT check for updates as the host site being down , the check for updates will make the downloaded file unusable.
  
  
• Download: HomeSearchfix. Unzip it to your desktop. Do not use it yet.
  
  
• Download Killbox
  Choose save as to your desktop. Unzip the file. Do not use it yet.

• Start AboutBuster and press START, and then OK. The program will start scanning.
  
  NOTE: If by any chance , check for update is done and error is shown , just unzip the downloadable zip file again and overwrite the existing AboutBuster which will bring back the original file again
  
  
• Doubleclick HomeSearchfix.reg to merge the info to the registry. You will be prompted to accept the merge, answer YES.
  
  
• Start Killbox
  • Place a checkmark next to [x] Delete On Reboot.
  • Highlight the following list and Copy it (Ctrl+C) to the windows clipboard.

  • Back in Killbox, go > file > paste from clipboard,
  • Click the red highlighted X button and click yes to the prompt when all the files have been pasted.
  • Then click OK
  • Exit Killbox and Reboot your PC.
• After the reboot, Start AboutBuster AGAIN and scan AGAIN.
  
  
• Clean temporary files:
  • Go > start > run and type cleanmgr and OK
  • Scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click OK to remove those files.
  • Click Yes to confirm deletion.
• Reboot your system into normal mode.
  
  
• Download Ewido scan
  • Check for updates.
  • Let it do a full run.
  • Copy the log. Past it to a blank Notepad file and save it to post here.
• Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it and the EWIDOscan log in this thread for review.

As I did this in safe mode, I logged in through System Administrator, instead of the User Account that I had ran the previous HijackThis log for.

The safemode did not have a few of the certain entries you told me to delete, like most of the O4 and O23 fixes could not be found.

The don't seem to be showing up in this new report either though (posted below).

I did everything as you said, however could not find any of the files you listed in Windows Explorer:

Also, I've been doing a selective startup all this time, until now I did a normal startup. So there seems to be more on this report.

We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

• Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  
• Click the Extended tab.
  
• Scroll down until you find the service.
  ===>System Startup Service
  
• Click once on the service to highlight it.
  
• Click Stop
  
• Right-Click on the service.
  
• Click on 'Properties'
  
• Select the 'General' tab
  
• Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  
• From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  
• Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.


B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste SvcProc in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

The first part of this was already done. We stopped the service in one of the earlier steps you had posted, so that was already taken care of.

I successfully deleted the NT service through HJT.

But in Safe Mode, again I could not find C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

There is a lot more junk to remove.

We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

• Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  
• Click the Extended tab.
  
• Scroll down until you find the service.
  ===>Windows lsass Service
  
• Click once on the service to highlight it.
  
• Click Stop
  
• Right-Click on the service.
  
• Click on 'Properties'
  
• Select the 'General' tab
  
• Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  
• From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  
• Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.


B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste lsass in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\WINDOWS\lsass.exe <==Make sure it is the one in this folder only, if present

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

I did everything as said, but when I went to safe mode to check for that file, it was not in the C:\WINDOWS, but it was in the C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder. However, when I tried to delete that file, it said that it could not delete it because it was write-protected or currently in use. Is this file okay to keep, or do we need to find another way to delete this file??

I am glad you read the directions properly. That file that was to be deleted only if found in C:\Windows\. It wasn't and you didn't. If you look into the 023 items, the one we were trying to remove is gone.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

• First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
  
  • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
  • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
  • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
  • Close the window with ok
• Please RUN HijackThis.
  . Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
  
  
• Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

• Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
  
  
• Reboot Your System in Safe Mode
  
  How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
  
  
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
  • Press Enter.
• Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):
  
  C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdtl.exe

EMERGENCY!

Help! I have a whole new problem now! I am posting this from work again, because my computer won't even startup now! If I try to startup in Normal mode, I get a blue screen of death!

What's weird is that it just began last night, but I hadn't done anything since I followed your directions on the last post (the one about getting rid of the "lsass"). But I had restarted the computer 2 times since following those steps. I mean, I even started up normally after doing that step to run the new log and post it on here, so you see that it worked then.

After that though, I shut down, and then got back on later that night to see if you'd posted a reply (doing absolutely NOTHING to the computer in between that time) and I whenever I would try to startup, the desktop would begin to load fine, and then it would go to a screen saying something like:

Problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

etc...

Technical Information: *** STOP: 0x00000008E (etc.)

Begin dump of physical memory.

etc...


But I am, however, able to still reboot in safe mode. So that's what I did. And in safe mode, I was able to run HijackThis, and I completely the steps that you just posted, about deleting winupdtl, WeirdOnTheWeb, etc...

So I went ahead and did that in safe mode, thinking maybe that would fix the problem. But it didn't. So I tried to do a selective startup. That's when I noticed something odd. When I went to run > msconfig, and looked in the startup tab, I saw something in there that I did not recognize.

It said:
dumprep 0-k %systemroot%\system32\dumprep0-k

So I tried to uncheck that to see if it would do anything.

I restarted in normal mode... same error message came up. Went back to safe mode, back into selective startup... and that "dumprep 0-k" option was rechecked again!

So I tried running a few other utilities in safe mode to see if it would help. One I ran was CWShredder. When it went through, there was an entry called "CWS.MSConfig" that said was REMOVED. I thought maybe that took care of it, because that "dumprep" was now gone from the Selective Startup tab.

Nope. When I rebooted, it showed the error again, and when I looked in safe mode, "dumprep" was back on the Selective Startup tab. I tried that method twice (running CWShredder).

So back in safe mode, I ran HijackThis. That "dumprep 0-k" came up in HijackThis too. I've seen those logs enough to know that that wasn't there before now, so I thought it would be safe to try and let HijackThis fix it.

That didn't work either. It did the same thing as the CWShredder -- it will remove it from the msconfig startup tab, but everytime I reboot, it always comes back.

So I scanned the hard drive for that name. It showed up in 4 places:

C:\WINDOWS\System32
C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch
C:\i386
C:\WINDOWS\I386

Do I need to manually delete one/some/all of those files? Or am I totally off, and is there something else wrong here?
