Hello all,

A few days ago, an AdAware scan brought back several registry entries related to the malware Virtumonde. These, along with the chronic pop-ups in Internet Explorer for WinFixer (I use Firefox primarily but must use IE for certain sites), have refused to leave my computer.

I have read the "Read This Before Posting a HijackThis log" thread and have performed all of the steps outlined on the page. However, the entries, plus a .dll (cbxvs.dll) detected by the Ewido Security Suite, have refused to leave, coming back immediately after deleting them.

Here are the Ewido and HijackThis logs:

TwinsMetsFan,

Welcome to the GTG Forums, I will be reviewing your HJT log.
Please read "ALL" of the instructions before proceeding:

You will need to print out these instructions for a reference or you can
save them by copying and pasting them into notepad and saving the text file to the desktop.

This process will take a few steps, please take your time and follow the directions in the order posted.
If you don't understand something please ask before performing any task..

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.13 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxvs.dll
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\system32\svxbc.*
  • Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxvs.dll

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: cbxvs - C:\WINDOWS\system32\cbxvs.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic by using Add Reply

Thanks,
rstones12

TwinsMetsFan,

OK that looks better..

We need to do a few items.

We need to clean up the Jave Cache, please follow these instructions:
  • Go to Start | Control Panel
    • Now double-click the Java Icon.
  • In the General Tab under Temporary Internet Files select the Delete Files button.
    • There are three options in this window, make sure ALL 3 are checked.
    • Downloaded Applets
    • Downloaded Applications
    • Other Files
  • Click OK
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Now Go to the Update tab.
    • Click on the Update Now button and follow the on-screen prompts.
    • Click OK to exit the Java Control Panel.
  • Reboot your system.
Once you have rebooted post back new HJT log by using Add Reply and let me know how your system is running.

Thanks,

Also, since running VundoFix in safe mode, this message has appeared every time I restart or shut down Windows just before the desktop switches to the Logging Off... screen:

"probedis.exe - DLL Application Extension
The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down."

Another message: Every other time I start Windows, this message appears (I can't remember the exact text:
"CWShredder
The application has performed an error and must close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell Microsoft about this problem..."

Other than those issues, the system is running well. I also ran an AdAware scan and the registry entries for WinFixer/Virtumonde have disappeared.

TwinsMetsFan,

Lets take a look...

"probedis.exe - DLL Application Extension
The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down."

You could try re-installing or updating the drivers for this.
Here is a link that might be of some help.

http://castlecops.com/postp534738.html#534738

If this doesn't help I would suggest posting a new topic in one of these forums, and one of the Staff Members should be able to help you out, they are great resources for this.

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Hardware-Components-and-Peripherals-f9.html
or
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Windows-XP-2000-2003-NT-f5.html

For the CWShredder error, try uninstalling it then re-installing the program and see if that fixes the error.

You have a few optionals left in the log that may help with your systems performance, but other than that you log looks good.

Thanks,

rstones12,

After following the instructions on the Castle Cops thread, the box notifying me of the failed DLL initialization stopped coming up. Also, as far as uninstalling and installing CWShredder, this program does not have a setup or an uninstall feature as it runs straight from the downloaded application, making me puzzled as to why an error comes up every so often (it now appears only once every four or five boots now). I'll delete the .exe that I have and re-download it to see if that makes a difference.

Lastly, regarding the log, which entries can be tweaked to improve the system performance? Here's a fresh HJT log for reference:

TwinsMetsFan,

OK...

Scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

Close all browsers and open windows except HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

These programs run at Start-Up...

Looks good, how is the system running.

Thanks,

rstones12,

The system is running great as Windows now starts up much faster after checking off the Quicktime and Office entries. Even better, the CWShredder errors have stopped and, as an added bonus, there's no sign of any adware.

Thanks so much for your help.

Sincerely,
TwinsMetsFan

TwinsMetsFan,

Good to see things back to normal....

Please take some time and read through the following information..

Here are some items that you will want to add to your to-do list:

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
See this link for a listing of some online and stand-alone Anti-Virus programs:
Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewall's and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Understanding and Using Firewall's

Spyware/Adware Detection and Removal Programs:
Understanding Spyware, Browser Hijackers, and DialersAd-Aware SEIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Ad-Aware SE
How to use Ad-Aware SE to remove Spyware
Spybot S&DIf you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to setup and use Spybot S&D
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware
I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:
  • SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
  • Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other Necessary Programs:
  • A More Secure Browser
Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox
Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Windows Security and Critical Updates
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Internet Explorer Security and Critical Updates
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Thanks,
rstones12
