After getting and removing several viruses on my computer I find myself with some left over trouble. One of which is when I try to shutdown my computer I get a strange error that reads: "shnlog.exe -dll initialization failed. Failed to initialize because windows is shutting down."

I originally used the trend micro scanner to remove the main parts of the viruses.

CWshredder fails to run on my system due to some odd Win32 error and I've had a bit of trouble with Ewido after it crashes after scanning/deleting files in the C:Recycler folder.

I'm trying to get rid of the last bits left on my computer, so I came here for help.

Here is the Hijackthis log. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to GTG.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Download LSPFix http://www.greyknigh.../spy/LSPFix.exe and run it. Check the box that says 'I know what I'm doing'. Click on xfire_lsp_10650.dll on the left window and then click on the arrow pointing to the right. Click Finish and follow the prompts.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = local.,
O2 - BHO: HP Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp7579.tmp

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop (or Appearance)->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for HijackThis, smitfiles.txt and Ewido.

I did as you asked, but for some odd reason ewido security center would freeze up when I tried to load it in safe mode. And as for the panda scan, I could find no auto clean box to check after that very long scan. No idea what to do with those. The furthest I got with ewido earlier was not in safe mode, so should I try it again from plain old windows?

Edit: Oh, and when I did the ewido scan before all this back when I semi got it working, I had thousands upon thousands of entries in my recycler folder that asked to be deleted, so it would be humanly impossible to click to delete every single one of them without clicking the button that does the same action with all detected files.

Please make sure that Word Wrap is turned OFF in Notepad before you post your HijackThis log next time. As you can see, the formatting it creates (see the log you posted) makes it harder for us to read it. Give me a new HijackThis log.

Empty your recycle bin first if files are there. Then for ewido, run it in normal mode if safe mode is causing problems. Yes, check the box to have the same action for all. Post the ewido log here when done.

I will be waiting for these two logs.

Sorry about the wordwrap. This should be better :tazz:

I'll have to get the Ewido log to you later, however, since it seems to run painfully slow on my system and it ended up going for 5 hours before cleaning 1/3 of the files it detected and then freezing on me. I'll try the scan overnight.

Unfortunately the situation with Ewido didn't get any better. I seem to be one of the many people who simply can't get it to run properly on their system. I encounter huge system slowdowns when it's running and it takes hours just to even say that I want to scan or update. Do you have any recommendations for another program, as Ewido just doesn't seem to like me? :tazz:

Oh, and i'm not sure if you overlooked the Panda logs, but when I did it I could not find any button to automatically clean them and the log read as such:

Panda scan logs:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/securityerror No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Alan\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url
Adware:Adware/Popuper No disinfected C:\Downloads\backups\backup-20051009-115808-308.dll
Security Risk:Application/RestartNo disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\Tools\Restart.exe

Does the 'no disinfected' part mean that it was not disinfected or should there be nothing to worry about?

Is Ewido slow both in Safe Mode and Normal Mode?

Delete tehse two files:

C:\Documents and Settings\Alan\Favorites\Antivirus Test Online.url
C:\Downloads\backups\backup-20051009-115808-308.dll

Rename this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Tools\Restart.exe

to Restart.exe.old instead.

Yes, no disinfected means Panda didn't delete it, so we must do it.

OK, let's try using the Kapersky Online Scanner. Post the log here when it's done.

Yes, Ewido is slow in both safe and normal mode.

The section that showed up with thousands of infected files through Ewido was my C:\Recycler\nprotect folder with numerous .moz files. What's odd, though, is that I can't find the folder in my computer as it appears to be hidden from view. I'm not sure what I can do to empty that, as my norton antivirus subscription ended long ago making me wonder why I still have that folder in the first place.

The Kaspersky file scanner found quite a few objects worth of note as well (yay!).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer and uncheck the same box to enable System Restore.

In your Outlook or Outlook Express program, see if you can find and delete these messages:

[From [email protected]][Date Wed, 10 Nov 2004 18:36:14 -0500]
[From [email protected]][Date Wed, 10 Nov 2004 18:35:57 -0500]

Make sure you empty your Trash Bin when done.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Spybot - Search & Destroy\Recovery\TwainTech.zip
C:\Recycler\nprotect\

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Restart and see if you can run Ewido now without the sluggish scans. Give me a new Kapersky log.

As you shall soon see, the C:Recycler folder ended up still existing mysteriously. However, nonetheless, the ewido scan ran flawlessly with no trouble whatsoever this time. Concerning your last post, I could only find the postmaster e-mail, but the bama one I could not. The specific e-mail it came from also goes to two different computers so I assume the same e-mails would need to be deleted there as well.

In addition to this, I just looked and found the twaintech file to still be there so it appears that killbox didn't work at all, oddly enough.

However, what may have gotten ewido running was uninstalling it and removing the quarantine data in the process. As there was about 100 thousand files in the quarantine, maybe it was too much to handle. As this was the third time I got the ewido scan actually scanning, the first 2 times I got about half of the recycler folder cleaned, and this finally got the rest.

And unfortunately it is horrendously, horrendously long. I tried to make it a small text to make it not completely overflow this post, heheh.

EDIT: Oh dear. It, um, appears the ewido log was too long to post. No idea what I should do about that, heh. Maybe I should host the txt file or something if necesary. Here's the nice clean kaspersky scan though.

Empty out the Spybot Recovery folder (including the TwainTech file).

For Ewido log, does it say clean with backup? If they all say that and no errors, then no need to post it. To do this quicky, do a search for error and see if you find that for any of the entries. If so, just copy and paste only those lines with the error here.

Spybot recovery folder emptied and the Ewido logs contains no word error and all seems to be cleaned with backup - now once the ewido trial ends I assume it's alright to simply delete the backups along with ewido itself? To clear up all that space, of course.

And thanks for everything! My computer is nice and happy now. If it could, it would give you a cookie.

No need to uninstall Ewido. It's a good program to have and if you don't mind it sticking around :tazz:, I suggest keeping it. It's compatible with most antivirus programs so there should be no conflict.

Don't worry about the trial period. After the 14 days, it will become the free edition :)
