I am a 1st time poster so I would like to say, 1) I am a novice computer user and 2) I really appreciate everything you ladies and gentlemen are doing here.

We just switched from dial-up to cable internet access. Right away we got lockx.exe which my son deleted, not sure by what process. I have the following programs installed and have just run them to clean my system. ZoneAlarm, AVG, Ad-aware and Spybot, all free versions. I have purchased and am ready to install the latest version of Zonealarm internet security suite but I want to make sure I installed it on a clean system.

I did steps 1, 2, 3 & 4 of the things to do 1st. Everything seems to work OK. I plan to delete all my old restore points (turn restore off then back on). While restore is OFF I plan to uninstall ZoneAlarm & AVG (free versions). Should I uninstall Ewido and TrojanHunter at the same time?

Any suggestions or recommendations on what I should do/run before installing Zonealarm is greatly appreciated. Also any suggestions or recommendations on things to add/run in conjunction with ZoneAlarm secutity suite?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Sam, thank you for taking the time to help me. I appreciate the help. I got impatient and this is what I have done since the log I posted earlier.
1. I re-ran steps 1, 2, 3 & 4 of the things to do 1st
2. I deleted all my old restore points (turn restore off then back on). Then made a new restore point.
3. I uninstalled ZoneAlarm & AVG (free versions).
4. I installed Zone Alarm 2006 Internet Security Suite.
5. I uninstalled Ewido and TrojanHunter.
6. I did a system scan/check with Zone Alarm and everything was OK.

Everything seems to work OK.

The first time I did steps 1, 2, 3 & 4 of the things to do 1st one of the programs found and I deleted this file “WUSB54Gv4.exe” thinking it was a virus. After that I started getting this message when I turn the computer off.

WUSB54Gv4.exe – Application error.
The instruction at “0x02a0f207” referenced memory “0x02a0f207”. The memory could not be “read”.

Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.

This file is related but not necessarily used by my Linksys wireless-G network adapter. I reinstalled the complete program associated with the adapter and I still get the message when I turn the computer off.

I know this is not a Malware problem but if you can offer any suggestions or recommendations to clear this annoyance it will be appreciated.

Here is my latest HyJack this log.

I hate to tell you this after all the work that you've done, but your log still shows signs of infection. We can come back to your wireless router issue after we have you cleaned up.

Let's see what we can find out. :tazz:

Download and save backlight to your desktop. Doubleclick blbeta.exe, accept the agreement, leave [X]scan through Windows Explorer checked, click scan > next.

You'll see a list of all the items it found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (where xxxxxxx represents numbers). The application finds both bad files and legitimate ones such as "wbemtest.exe", so don't choose the rename option yet! Copy and paste the log it generated in your next reply.

I did as you requested with Backlight and it did not find anything. There was no list of items and no log to save. I (hope) I attached a word doc with a print screen picture of the Backlight results.

If there is anything else you want me to try let me know.

Thanks

Good! That makes this much easier.

Click Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs and uninstall any of these that appear:

My Way
My Search
My Web Search Bar
My Way Speed Bar
My Search Bar

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Now lets check some settings on your system.
  • Enter your Control Panel and double-click on Network Connections
  • Then right click on your Default Connection
    • Usually Local Area Connection for Cable and DSL
  • Left click on Properties
  • Double-Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item
  • Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS Servers Automatically
  • Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks
Next Go start run type cmd and hit OK
type
ipconfig /flushdns
then hit enter, type exit hit enter
(that space between g and / is needed)

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log.

Sorry for the delay. I have been having some non-related problems with my Comcast internet connection.

I did not find any of these.
My Way
My Search
My Web Search Bar
My Way Speed Bar
My Search Bar

I did find and tried to delete "My Way Search Assistant, size 0.09mB". see attachment for the message I got when I tried to delete.

In Hijackthis I did not find the entry “04 – HKLM\..\Run:[dmrdn.exe} C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmrdn.exe”. I did see but DID NOT CHECK “04 – HKLM\..\Run:[dmguq.exe} C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmguq.exe”

The network connection setting we all as you requested them to be set.

Here is my Hijackthis log

Everything seems to be working OK. I did ZoneAlarm, SpyBot & Ad-Aware scans and everything came back clean. Is it OK for me to uninstall the trial version of ewido & Spy sweeper? They have expirations dates so I thought I would just get rid of them now, while they are fresh in my mind. Also after I do the deletions I was going to delete all my old restore points and make a fresh start with restore. Any problem doing that? You have been tremendously helpful and patience. Thank you for all your help.

Good to hear! :)
Yes, you can go ahead now and uninstall Spysweeper and Ewido. And flushing and resetting a new "Clean" restore point is also a recommended step. Here's some other suggestions for you as well.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
