I just bought a used laptop(ibm thinkpad 760 EL) without an operating system. I wanted to find out what operating systems I can install it. The laptop has a cd drive but no floppy, how do I get it to install from the cd drive.

the laptop did not come with any cds or floppys. Only came with the laptop, ac
adaptor, zircom modem card.

Help is greatly appreciated. =)

Hi! I'm replying to your posting about booting the IBM Thinkpad EL 760. As far as I know, I you won't be able to use CD-ROM to boot up the EL 760 because I've been trying to upgrade my Thinkpad from using Win95 to Win98SE. What complicates matters even more is that my internal 3.5" floppy drive broke; I'll definitely need to buy a new disk drive. Hope this helps!

I own ThinkPad 760XL. You can boot from CD (Knoppix etc). But not directly - using Smart Boot Manager. Slackware distros 9+ include its img-file (100-200kb). The solution is to put your HDD into another laptop (or desktop, if you have an adapter for 2.5 HDD) with SMBM floppy already in the floppy-drive. Than install SmBM to the MBR of yor HDD.

What i need of you ThinkPad-users, is a pack of dos-drivers for PCMCIA. Than I would use... for example for the problem abowe: a ghost image of win98 partition from compact-flash in PCMCIA adapter.

PS. I wish to communicate to owners of similar models of laptop.

I've installed win98 se, win2000, and XP all on a 760XD or XL - can't recall which. If you hold down F1 (I think!) while powering on, you'll get the bios menu where you can specify what devices to boot. Hope it's not password protected or you know the password.

Now I don't recall if it allows booting off the CD, seems like not. So, the next thing I probably tried was to either make a bootable XP floppy to boot off of and install off the CD OR I might have copied the whole friggin XP cd onto the Hard Drive and installed from there via a boot-to-command-prompt using the previous OS. I did it and probably did one of those - sorry I don't recall the details.

Regarding PCMCIA, as I just posted in another thread, if you want it to do CARDBUS, you have to enable it in the bios using the utility program - by default cardbus compatibility is turned off.

I did have Win2000 running with the cardbus and had a CardBus USB PCMCIA adapter working in that configuration.

I have a thinkpad 760e but i dont have a floppy drive and i cannot boot from internal cd drive. The bios don't support it.

I have installed win 2000 from the original owner, and i want to install W95, the old one. what can i do?. Someone told me "use smart boot manager" but i don't know how to use it, and sorry for my english i'm learning it a few month ago. Thanks for any help !!!
