I made a few additions to the rules that will help us help others a little better. My suggestions are in bolded font. Feel free to disregard, edit, tweak or rewrite if anything I just wrote is worth it. There are times we get busy, and these kind of expectations from our members will speed things up for everybody.
Respectfully,
Johanna

I'm a total newbie here, waiting on a reply to my first post yesterday asking for help, and want to say I am already impressed by this site just from reading other topics and seeing how helpful you people are in fixing really nasty problems. Amazing.

There's one thing that has confused me though, and I thought I would mention it here, and that is whether or not to reply to my own post in order to add information, before any staff member has responded to it. In no. 5 of these new user instructions it says to do that, but elsewhere in threads I see that adding a reply to a message will knock it out of queue, possibly forever. On the other hand, in the malware help forum, one of the instructions suggests using a reply to one's first request for help as a way to post pasted logs if the user is having trouble with cutting and pasting. I did have a cut-and-paste problem, and was prepared to post a reply that would contain the pasted logs, but then found out that I could edit my original post to fix things, which I did. I hope that editing the message hasn't affected my position in queue.

In the time that has passed since that first posting and edit, I think I've figured out how to resolve a couple of problems that I put into that post (but not the main malware problem), and would like to say so either in the message or in a reply, because it might save to time and effort. But I'm scared to either edit or reply to the post to explain, because it might affect my position in queue (and I'm sure you all know very well how anxious us malware victims can be about getting the problem fixed :tazz: ) So, I won't mess with it, but think that it would be helpful if the issue of replies could be clarified a bit. And whether or not editing a post is ok or not.

Thanks.

If you edit your post it is unlikely to trigger another e-mail notifier, a reply which includes the updates would let everyone who has already replied know

Thanks. Based on that advice, I've gone ahead and edited the post to let whoever responds know that I've got a grip on a couple of little issues now. No one has replied to the post yet, which is why I didn't want to post one myself, which would cause my request for help to move out of the set of "0 reply" posts when the forum is sorted by replies. I understand that is a method staff members use to choose the posts to which they are going to respond.
