Fixing the kids' computer yet again -- this is becoming a monthly thing...

I updated my Virus Definitions today (Norton AntiVirus) and as soon as I did I received an immediate message thats theres a high risk virus on my computer called Trojan.Vundo and that it cannot be fixed. I went to Symantec's website and downloaded a removal tool specifically for this virus. I followed all the instructions but but the tool said the virus was not found. Then I followed the manual instructions which involved booting into safe mode and going into the registry. All the keys it asked me to locate were not present. Yet when I have Norton Anti-Virus active background protection on, I can not get rid of the virus message.

In addition I have:
--- ran ewido and removed 11 infected files
--- ran Ad-Aware and cleaned infections
--- ran Spybot Search & Destroy and nothing was found
--- ran a full virus scan with Norton AntiVirus and deleted the infect file (but I still get the virus message)
--- ran Windows Cleanup

Did everything I can and now im turing to Geeks2Go, again, to help me out the rest of the way.

My HijackThis log is below, thanks in advance.

P.S. Something interesting to note, never saw this message before but when I ran HJT I recieved a prompt saying something about an overwhelming number of infected domains and that it would be better to delete then fix the file itself.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

I will make this easier for you. Do you have a modified hosts file that you downloaded to block out spyware/ads? If you do, I suggest getting it back again since I will ask you to reset it now. If you don't have one yet, I will give you a link to one once we are all clear here.

Download Hoster http://www.greyknigh.../spy/Hoster.exe and run it. Choose the 'Restore Original Hosts' button and press OK.

Please download VundoFix.exe at http://www.atribune....ds/VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files.
* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key (or F5 in some machines) until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* Please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayw.dll

* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* When asked for a second path, enter -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\wyadd.*
* Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
* The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
* In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayw.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddayw - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayw.dll

* After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
* Pressing any key will cause a 'Blue Screen of Death' this is normal, do not worry!
* Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp! http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click 'Options...'
Move the arrow down to 'Custom CleanUp!'
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK. Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.
It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run an online virus scan at ActiveScan http://www.pandasoft.../activescan.htm

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Ok followed all the instruction but before I post the logs I should let you know I encountered the following problems:

a) When using the VundoFix application while in Safe Mode, I followed all the steps until HijackThis! was supposed to open, the following happened:
-- I got a prompt by Norton Antivirus trying to block the script, I chose authorize script.
-- I got an error message.
-- HJT did not open.
-- I hit a key to force a reboot and ran HJT when the computer started up.

b) When I ran HJT I was able to remove the second item ("020 - Winlogon Notify: ddayw - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayw.dll") but the first item was not present ("O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152").

I also want to note that I have Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect enabled and I'm not getting an alert about the trojan at the moment. (Before the only option I had was to disable auto-protect to get rid of the message.)

Ok now that thats out of the way, below is the PandaScan log, the subsequent reply will be the HJT log.

Thank you by the way.

That's ok if the other entry is not found in HijackThis.

Click on Start->Settings->Control Panel->Java Plug-in and click on the Cache tab. Then click on the Clear button and hit OK.

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say Yes:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts.bho
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cache32dsrf4535dfs
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Lycos
C:\1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\inf\alchem.inf
C:\WINDOWS\system32\efhkj.*
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkhfe.dll

If you get a PendingOperations message, just close it and restart your computer manually.

Restart...

Delete these if still found:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cache32dsrf4535dfs
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Lycos

Run a new Panda scan and post the log here.

Did you try deleting them yourself also? Asking because KillBox doesn't always delete some of these 100%. So we ask users to double check and delete them manually if found.

Delete these:

C:\WINDOWS\alchem.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cache32dsrf4535dfs
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Lycos
C:\!Submit\

Restart and run another Panda scan. Post that log here.

Turns out killbox didn't remove those files, I deleted them manually.

Here are the PandaScan results:

Detected Disinfected
Virus 0 0
Spyware 0 0
Hacking Tools 0 0
Dialers 0 0
Security Risks 0 0
Suspicious files 0 0

Does that mean its all clean?

Download AimFix and run it now.

Check and fix these in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stratas] lockx.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [stratas] lockx.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [stratas] lockx.exe

Delete that lockx.exe file if found.

Restart and post a new HijackThis log.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
