[Lostandconfused]

My computer has been running slow of late and last night norton picked up a trojan.vundo on my pc which has since spread to another file. I read your intro page and ran trojan hunter. It found one instance not two as per norton's findings. I ran adaware and cwshredder.

I also upon start up get a message from norton
c:\windows\web\wallpaper\baktapi.dll is the virus in question yet i can not delete it.

Hi Lostandconfused

You have the Vundo infection and also have some others such as VirtualBouncer and WildTangent.

Please follow my instructions carefully and we should have you back to normal soon. The fix may take several iterations, so don't be worried if your symptoms are not fixed first time.

Please print these instructions as you will not have access to the internet during certain parts of the fix. Also, save these instructions to Notepad as I will ask you to copy & paste from them later.

Preparation

You are running Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking and that will interfere with out fix. We will disable it and then re-enable it after you are clean.

To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking :

• Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
• Click Options.
• If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
• In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
• In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
• Click OK

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

• Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
• Double-click on the My Computer icon.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• After the new window appears select the View tab.
• Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
• Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
• Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.

Download CleanUp and install it.

Download the Killbox. Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.


The Fix

• Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

• Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

Once in safe mode, please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

VirtualBouncer
VBouncer
Toolbar
P2P Networking
SearchUgrader
Gator
GMT

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..

Let the system reboot.


Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Your log looks a lot better, but Vundo is still there. The Vundofix failed because you did not have administrator privileges. When you log onto safe mode, please ensure you choose the user account 'admin' or the user account with admin privileges.

Can you retry my original instructions and when entering safe mode, log on to the account with admin privileges?

Note that because you have already followed the instructions, some entries in HijackThis may now be missing. Please ignore these and do as much as you can .

Then, please post a fresh HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder.

I am having problems accessing all the programs I need on my administrator account in safe mode. I can't get see Hijackthis or vundokill or cleanup ect on my desktop. I even went so far as to right click(while on my account) go to the security tab, go to advance and add a section Kylesroom-administrator. Thinking it would allow me access under the other account, yet it still will not.

No problem with the delay - real life always comes first . The only danger is that the infections change in the time between your posts, but we can deal with that.

The vundofix can work in Normal Mode, but we'll have one more try at this in Safe Mode first. Even if the desktop shortcuts are missing in the Admin account, you should still be able to access the files using Windows Explorer or My Computer. You should open Explorer and navigate to wherever you saved vundofix or hijackthis and double click on the file mentioned in my instructions. For CleanUp, it should be located in the 'Program Files\CleanUp' folder.

Since my original post, the vundofix has been updated and the instructions are now out of date. I've create some new instructions for you :

Please print these instructions as you will not have access to the internet during certain parts of the fix. Also, save these instructions to Notepad as I will ask you to copy & paste from them later.

Preparation

You are running Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking and that will interfere with out fix. We will disable it and then re-enable it after you are clean.

To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking :

• Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
• Click Options.
• If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
• In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
• In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
• Click OK

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

• Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
• Double-click on the My Computer icon.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• After the new window appears select the View tab.
• Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
• Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
• Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

Please delete the old VundoFix.exe that you downloaded earlier and the VundoFix folder that was created.

Now download the new VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.

If you have deleted or uninstalled it, re-download CleanUp and install it.

If you have deleted it, re-download the Killbox. Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.


The Fix

• Open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

• Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
• Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu... or use Explorer to navigate to the Program Files\CleanUp folder and double click on CleanUp.exe).

Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.
Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

Once in safe mode, please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..

Let the system reboot.


Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

The Vundofix failed because the Windows account you were using did not have administrator privilges. Based on your new log I have created a new fix.

Ensure that Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking is still disabled (I asked you to do this in the original fix - see instructions above).

Ensure that hidden files are still visible (I asked you to do this in the original fix - see instructions above).

Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware Real Time Protection, as this may interfere with the fix (we will re-enable afterwards :

• In your system tray (bottom right of screen), right click on the MS Antispyware icon (it looks like a red, yellow and black target)
• Click 'Security Agents Status (Enabled)
• Click 'Disable Real Time Protection'

The Vundofix has been updated since you downloaded it - firstly, delete the whole Vundofix folder from your desktop. Then please download the latest version VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.

The Fix

• Please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter. You must logon to an account that has administrator privileges

Run Killbox :

I can't log onto any other account on my pc that has my programs stored on it.

When I reboot in safe mode I am given the option (kyle(my account with administrator rights, double and tripled checked)) and the regular administrator account.

I created a kyle2 account(limited) and I can't share files between the two, I can't share files to the administrator account from my first Kyle account.

Also the Administrator account is only accessible upon Safe mode start up not regular start up.

That being said I will rerun everything you said under the administrator account(the one named administrator) if you can tell me how to access the files I need because I have no option to log on to that account under normal circumstances.

As stated above my regular account(only one on the computer) is a admin account, what would you like me to do? This thing is a few steps from the window a case of beer and satisfaction knowing I put it out of its misery and mine.

As you say, the Admin account should only be visible in Safe Mode. By default this account does not have a password (leave the passwork blank).

Please try moving the whole Vundofix folder from your 'Kyle' desktop to the C:\ drive (in other words, creating a C:\Vundofix folder). Also move the Killbox.exe to the C:\ drive (e.g. C:\Killbox\Killbox.exe). Finally move HijackThis to the C:\ drive (e.g. C:\HijackThis). These programs should now be accesible to all accounts, even in Safe Mode.

Then try my latest instructions in Safe Mode from the admin account. When complete, check the vundofix.txt file and see if it contains the [484]Error 0x6 : The handle is invalid errors. If it does then redo the instructions again, this time from your Safe Mode 'Kyle' account. Then re-check the vundofix.txt file again and if that error is still shown, please try the fix again from Normal Mode 'Kyle' account.

Please reply with the vundofix.txt file and a fresh HijackThis log taken from Normal Mode.

My computer is Ultra slow.. It takes for ever on start up, msmsg always comes up and i keep removing it from my start up. I now get a "work offline" or "connect" pop up on start up after doing the latest instructions. My trojan vundo warning from norton still pops up.

On shut down I have issues with Ccapp not shutting down and I have to manually end it by clicking. I also have that issue with fire fox.

If you're not sure, please redo the fix in Normal Mode under the Kyle account and post the new vundofix.txt file.
