Hi :tazz:!

I found the Surfaccuracy folder and the system32.dll file and deleted them. I also followed your Java instructions. :)

When I first rebooted, right after I clicked Shut down I got these 3 messages, even though I had closed all my windows and open programs:

IExplorer - typical End Task window

"MPGKBDNE.EXE - DLL Initiation Failed
because the Windows station is shutting down."

"ATLINVER.EXE (same message as MPGKBDNE.EXE)"

Once I managed to close those windows, my computer did restart. When it was initializing, I got this message in a balloon at the lower right:

"Your system might be at risk. Symantec is turned off"

When I opened IE I got some popups as well.

Then I followed your last set of directions and rebooted again. Shut down went fine. Restart, still got the "Your system might be at risk" balloon.

So far, no popups, however my system still seems a bit sluggish, and my mouse cursor switches from the pointer to the hourglass every once in awhile when it's just sitting there.

Here is my new logfile. How does it look?

Also, I logged onto AIM (which is where I caught pokapoka70.exe waaaaay back at the beginning of all this)... and right after I open AIM my mouse pointer starts going crazy. It flashes the hourglass every second. Even after I close AIM, the hourglass flashing continues (it's still going now).

What do you think?

Ah...and the pop-ups are back. This one is "Cassava". I've been getting the same few over and over. One is this "Cassava" one, another one is a Search Engine one. (I'll start writing down what they are if the other ones pop up).

Ugh... :) .

THanks so much for your continual help!! :tazz: Please let me know what next.

Alright lets take a look beyond Hijack

* Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

ERROR
"Insufficient System Resources exist to complete the requested service."

When I closed that window, I got this message:

INTERNET
"The iten you selected is unavailable. It might have been moved, renamed, or removed. Do you want to remove it from the list? YES / NO"

I clicked No...

:tazz: I don't know what's going on....

Thats strange it works fine for me :tazz: Oh well lets try another

Download WindPFind

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Here's the WinPFind.txt file:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

hi :tazz:

i left my computer on over night and it must have restarted on its own because this morning i had to enter my password and log in. when i got in, i got a message that said "Your system has recovered from a serious error". (I copied the error data that it provided and pasted that below)

BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : 81EE955F BCP3 : EF1F8C70
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 256_1

Does that mean anything?

I will check on the error

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Navigate to this folder C:\WINDOWS\ppJqK and delete it. If it wont delete in normal mode you will have to go to safemode.

Rehide your files and folders when done

Post a new hijack log and tell me how your system is running now.

Thanks :tazz:

Hey :tazz: Thanks so much for your help!

Sorry I was out of town for the weekend, but now I'm back. Found the file you mentioned and deleted it. Symantec had also quarantined a file (ATLINVER.exe) and told me to reboot, so I did that.

Upon rebooting, I got:
1) The "Your System is at Risk, Symantec is disabled" balloon
2) Symantec auto-protect popped up with a message saying it found again "Spyware.Apropos.C, Left Alone, ATLINVER.exe, Spyware, C:\Program Files\MICTIONS". This time, it didn't even give me the option to quarantine, and when I tried to delete the file it wouldn't let me... said the file might have been moved or already deleted, etc.
3) Opened internet explorer and got popups. This one is "Find The Right School"
4) Opened AIM, still got same weird mouse hourglass flashing.
5) System still sluggish

Lets try this tool

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder
