Internet Explorer Hijack

Everytime I try to open the internet explorer, it comes up with the following message: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. The data this error report contains is the following:
AppName: ieexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: apopup.dll Modver: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 00005d41
I think because of the problem I'm having with internet explorer, my windows xp does not shut down, and my windows updates does not work. I even try to go to microsoft.com to download the updates. The page goes blank and the system freezes. Please I need help big time. :tazz:
