I lost my power cord to my external drive (80G Smartdisk) and I couldn't find a replacement on their website.
So, I brought one at Radio ShacK. Well, when I plugged it up a little puff of smoke came out of the back of the drive and it died.

I don't have the money to pay a data retrival company. My questions are...is it possible to open this thing up and remove the memory disk and place it somewhere else for it to work? How hard are they to repair? And, where can I learn how to fix my problem?

You may be able to take the hard drive itself out and make it a slave in another machine by changing the jumper settings. However I would take it to a computer repair place and let them decide what is possible because you could damage your computer if you don't know what is happening with it.
