I have a BHO warning popping up all the time and got instructions from my brother on how to remove it. (He does generally know what he's doing with computers). However, I'm running into a problem. Here's what he has me doing and what's going wrong...

1. reboot into safe mode
2. run killvundo.bat - hit enter, type in c:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrp.dll, enter F6 enter, type in c:\WINDOWS\system32\prqss.*, enter F6 enter
3. HJT will open, check the 02 BHO and 020 Winlogon notify entries for the above file, fix checked
4. close HJT, hit any key to reboot
5. run cleanup
6. run panda active scan online

I'm getting stuck at step 4. When I hit any key, nothing happens. If I hit enter, the Vundo Fix folder opens and I'm back where I started. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Here's my current HJT log...

Hello natenatmom and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a mixture of malware including the Vundo downloader and SaveNow. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Your PC is far too heavily defended by antispyware programmes. They have to be disabled for the fix, so please disable Microsoft Antispyware, Ewido, Spyware Doctor, SpywareGuard and AOL Spyware Protection from running during the fix, they may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from Process Explorer

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from KillBox

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

the rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrp.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrp.dll 's under winlogon click OK.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrp.dll then click the kill button.

Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00DBDAC8-4691-4797-8E6A-7C6AB89BC441} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrp.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VVSN] C:\Program Files\VVSN\VVSN.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ssqrp - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ssqrp.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

now run KillBox and paste these lines below into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X Button, say yes to the 1st prompt but NO to reboot now

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrp.dll
C:\Program Files\VVSN\VVSN.exe

Then on KillBox top bar, press tools/delete temp files and follow those prompts and say yes to everything

then let it reboot

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

Hi,
Thanks for the help! I'm not sure about identity settings. When I boot in safe mode, there's either Administrator or Janet (that's me). But when booting in regular mode, it just starts up without giving me a choice. I started to follow your instructions after logging in under administrator but there were no entries for c:\WINDOWS\system32\ssqrp.dll on either the winlogon threads screen or the explorer.exe screen. I tried it after logging on under the Janet identity too and I still didn't find anything.

Hello Janet

From what you tell me, you are already the administrator on a single ID PC. Please continue with your logon.

Here it is. I see that now there are different BHO entries on here. Also, I shut down all those spyware programs that were running and changed the preferences so they wouldn't run on start up but it seems like they're still running. Spyware Doctor keeps popping up by itself too. I exit it and then a few minutes later, it just starts up.

Hello again Janet

What you had, the Vundo downloader, has downloaded Vundo B to your PC, so the fix changes quite a lot. Let’s see what we can do for you.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter once.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhe.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!): C:\WINDOWS\system32\ehkmp.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED: O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhe.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VVSN] C:\Program Files\VVSN\VVSN.exe
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkhe - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhe.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the programme then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Alright, another little problem... when I run killvundo, the warning comes up like you said but when I press enter, everything locks up completely, mouse won't move, nothing happens on the vundo screen, etc. I've tried several times.

Hello again Janet

You must have a problem with your OS, WinXP

I think that now is a good time to run System File Checker, to make sure all of your protected files are not corrupt. The scan will automatically replace any corrupt files that it finds.

Click Start
Select Run
At the prompt type sfc /scannow Please note that there is a single space between sfc and /scannow.

Typing this will start the programme, and a box should appear telling you how much longer the process should take.

Sometimes the scan will prompt you for your Windows XP disc upon starting the scan. if this happens please make sure that you can view protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Uncheck" Hide protected operating system files.
Then rerun the scan.

Once the scan is complete:

Check your Windows Updates! After using the File Protection Service, you might need to reapply some updates.

Please reboot, and let me know if anything has changed.

Also, please rehide the protected files:My Computer
Tools
Folder Options
View
"Check" Hide protected operating system files.

Hello again Janet

That appears to have been successful, since your HJT log is exactly what I was expecting to see

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhe.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VVSN] C:\Program Files\VVSN\VVSN.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkhe - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhe.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following folder, and delete it:

C:\Program Files\VVSN\

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Please post a fresh(final?) HJT log

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated. :)

Happy safe surfing Janet!
