Hello-- I am absolutely horrible with computers, but I've been doing EVERYTHING I was instructed to do on many different sites, and cannot get this virus off of my computer. (or recognized by removal tools) PLEASE (if you have any idea of how to help...) offer some advise to me. I'll even mail you a lovely home-made batch of your-personal-favorite variety of cookies if my computer is fixed & you are within shipping distance. (A little bribery never hurt, eh? And I know baking like you know computers... hopefully.)
Okay.
This virus alert from Norton AntiVirus went on yesterday:

Object name C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddabx.dll
Virus Name Trojan.Vundo.B
Action Taken Unable to repair this file/Access to the file was denied

[The "object name" file was created Monday, September 19, 2005, 3:23:08 PM, and "accessed" yesterday, exactly one month after it was created. I'm not sure if that helps at all...]

So, I followed the troubleshooting advise from Norton/Symantec Security Response, to use the Trojan.Vundo.B Removal Tool (and eventually used a newer version of it that someone suggested on another forum to someone else with the same virus.) I followed all of the instructions (Disabled Windows XP System Restore, started the computer in Safe Mode, etc.) and the tool said that there was no Trojan.Vundo.B on my computer. I did this MULTIPLE times, just in case I randomly missed a step. No luck.

I went through each step provided by the "Preparation" instructions (cleaed temp. files, scanned with Ad-Aware, used Spybot S&D, Checked for Rogue/Suspect products and sites, ran Norton, Trend Housecall AND Panda Active Scan, and Updated Windows.) We had the computer on Auto-Update concerning Windows XP already installed the Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)...so perhaps that's part of the problem?

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a mixture of malware and the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Do you recognise this company: Ameritech Electronic Commerce 2701 W 15th ST, Plano, TX 75075 US ?

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Oh dear. I just attempted to post the information and it didn't go through. Let's try this again.

So. First of all, thank you very much for responding so quickly. You're my new hero.

And second-- I think I messed some stuff up along the way, just to warn you. (I'm seriously technologically inept.)

I am pretty sure that my PC has just one individual setting (Nancy) on it, in addition to the Administrator setting. However, if you count the Administrator as an individual, then there are two. (? Is that a family PC? Who knows.) Either way, I went into safe mode under Administrator, and used the killvundo.bat without a problem. However, after that, the fix HiJackThis did not run automatically, nor could I manually open it, as the start menu disappeared and Control +Alt + Delete did not produce any menu either. SO I shut down the computer and restarted it again in Safe Mode.
THEN in the middle of checking the boxes, the power in the house randomly blacked out for a minute...And I started it up one more time (with a few swear words). Finally, I ran HiJackThis-- but the previous logfile was not there & the middle part was blank (Maybe that's what was supposed to happen?) It made a new log and I was able to fix most of the items from yesterday's log, with exception of those listed below, as they were no longer in it:

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

Feel free to get rid of anything you want to, however since 99.9% of computers are neglected and never cleaned up, I would keep Clean-up and use it every day.
