Don't mean to undermine all the other comments here, but nobody mentioned to do a hard reboot. The settings might be calibrated for a different transfer, unlikely but the only viable reason I can see now. Turn off the computer and the modem for about 30 seconds, then turn on the modem, then the computer, then it should reset the settings on the modem as well as the computer. If it doesn't work, what system spec do you have? If you haven't got win 2k and above there may be some incompatibilities with the OS so you might need to look at the ISP homepage and download some drivers there, as your ethernet card sounds fine.
