Hey guys,

Mate of mine directed me here after i described my syptoms to him...

Since that ive read mgozalbo's post entitled "Spysheriff, iau.exe, msras.exe, hijacked desktop.." and have followed all the instructions given by thatman in the thread, but as i have no internet connection im unable to

Ive since read more on malware and am about to install CW Shredder and WinSockFix to see if they will help the situation, but here's my HijackThis Log... just hoping someone can see the problem for us

Yes, your lspchain is broken, that explains why IE won't run.
So to fix it, please look if NewDotNet or New.Net or New.Net Domains is present in your Software > add/remove programs and uninstall it.
Reboot afterwards.

If it's not present, please download this uninstaller: http://www.new.net/s...install6_76.exe

and transfer it from the pc where you posted your log from to the infected pc where there is no internetconnection. Run it then.

Also, I see you were dealing with spysheriff etc... It could be possibe that your wininet.dll is also infected and that can cause also an IE that won't run.
But we'll find out later.
I also need a new hijackthislog made in normal mode, not in safe mode.

I have run the Newdot Net Uninstaller but still no internet connection... Although the page has gone from tryin to load about:blank and gettin nothin to startin to load normal pages then goin to cannot find connection/DNS error.... Just if that helps.

Included is another Hijack This Log, taken this time in normal mode...

I don't know what you have been deleting and fixing before you started this thread, but I really hope you didn't delete something legit. So can you please tell me what you exactly did before starting with this thread to get rid of spysheriff etc ??

Also try this:

*Download WinsockFix
Unzip it and place it on your desktop.
Start Winsockfix.exe and click "Reg backup"
Your current registry will be saved in the folder "ERDNT"
Then click FIX
Your system will reboot.

In regards to Hijackthis, i only followed the directions given by thatman in the thread i quoted before,

Well, those directions that can be done without internet connection. Basically i installed Adaware SE, Spybot S&D, Cleanup 4.0, Ewido... Ran all their scans and removed what they found, removed prefetch folder, ran cleanmgr on both hard drives... I installed Killbox, but was unsure on how to use it so i have not run it yet.

When i was playin around in hijackthis... i was only deleting the files that i had in common with those in mgozalbo's thread. For example:

If winsockfix doesn't help, then you have to take a look at your settings in Netgear WG121 Wireless. But first, disable your firewall and look if you have connection.

Hey,

Went through my NETGEAR settings, internet connection and changed some of the access settings for secure sites...

Not sure which one of those did it but i got IE back, everythin seems to be running properly and a bit quicker too... just about to run panda to finish it off.

I got norton antivirus 05 and its affiliates... is that enough or would you recommend a malware/spyware preventitve program as well.

Hello,

Because you were dealing with spysheriff as well, I want you to perform something else also, because I'm pretty sure your wininet.dll was/is also infected and some other leftovers must be present as well.

So perform next:

Download smitRem and save the file to your desktop. If you already had smitrem present on your system, I strongly suggest you download the new version, so the version above, because it's being updated.
Doubleclick it and choose install. This will create a new folder on your desktop with the name smitrem.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

Post the log smitfiles.txt (which you will find on your C:\)

It could be possible, after reboot that your system is using the windows classic theme again.
To restore this and set it back to XP-theme, rightclick on your desktop > properties > tab Appearances and choose Windows XP style again under windows and buttons.
Click apply and OK.

Glad I could help.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Most important thing here --- Visit asap http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to download and install all the updates and security patches!!

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!
