Trojan.Vundo and slow performance issues [RESOLVED]

hi,

I have a nortan anti-virus alert popup saying I have trojan.vundo and it can't repair/delete or quarantine c:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutq.dll

I have run fixvundo.exe several times (downloaded from the symantic website), but the alert does not go away. On top of that the performance of my computer is very very slow and this is a new computer that i just bought from IBM (1.7GH, 512 BM RAM)....very frustrating.. Moreover i am sitting in Kazakhstan with no way to communicate to my family and friends in US without the internet... please help resolve my PC issues :tazz:

Hi anitam and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

2. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here . Please choose the default location of C:\Program Files\ as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

Run HijackThis
Click SCAN and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')
POST the log into this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Hi Trevuren,

I just wanted to let you know that i got the winfixer popup today..and also when i was trying to do something in IE, it closed down...I am not sure if this has anything to do with the virus you are helping me with, but thought i should let you know.

Also while i am waiting for you, should i run microsoft update? will that help improve the performance of my rather slow computer?

DO NOT DO ANY UPDATES UNTIL WE HAVE FINISHED CLEANING YOUR MACHINE

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.
It should look like this

VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
Press enter to continue....
At this point press enter one time.
Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
and then press enter:
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
- C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutq.dll
Press Enter to continue with the fix.
Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
staff then press enter:
At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\qtutv.*

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
Press Enter to continue with the fix.
The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutq.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtutq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutq.dll
After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi,

I followed your instructions and i had a couple of discrepancies -

1) After I typed the first file path, I entered F6 and then Enter, and i got the hijackthis program popup instead of a prompt for hte second filename. So i rebooted in safemode again and this time after i entered the first filepath, i just pressed enter once. I then got the prompt for the second filepath.

2) In HiJackthis i was unable to find the first item mentioned in your email (02 - BHO: MSEvents.....)

hi,

I just wanted to add one more thing... so, i thought perhaps the vundofix was corrupted or something so i downloaded it again from this post and extracted it. then when i went to safe mode and executed it, it asked me for the first filepath which i gave (C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutq.dll) and then it basically told me that the file does not exist and again opened up hijackthis..

Also now when i login, i don't see the norton alert box.... so, i guess i am not sure if the virus still exists or not.... hope you can help me...

Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutq.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtutq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtutq.dll (file missing)
Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
Reboot Your System
Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now. In addition, please tell me if there are any more malware problems that you are aware of.

hi,

here is the new hjt post. apart from the vundo virus, i am not aware of another virus on my computer but my computer is very slow in starting up and in opening IE windows/going to different websites, especially hotmail. is there anything i can do to make it start faster and to surf faster?

Here is a list of startup items from your log which represents programs that are really not needed to run at startup or, im some cases, run at all. By using HJT to remove them from your startup sequence, they remain available to you on an "on demand" basis, which essentially means if you think your mouse needs an updated driver, you choose to go to the Logitec site and check and your system doesn't check every few minutes for nothing.

If you decide to remove some or all of the items from the startup and autorun sequence, please do the following, choosing the items carefully:

Run HijackThis, click scan, and place a checkmark beside each one of the items that you want to remove from the startup list:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UC_Start] C:\Program Files\IBM\Updater\\ucstartup.exe

I followed your instructions and it does appear to be faster than it was....thank you so much. I will certainly evangelize this site to others. How do i go about making a donation?

By the way, not sure if this is your expertise but is there an easy way in which i can share large files 10MB without attaching them and sending them via email...

Also i have norton anti-virus on..are there other things i can do to keep the performance up and the nasties out?

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:

Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

2. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
Left click on "System Restore Tab"
Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
Left click on "Apply"

TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE

Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
Click on "Apply"

Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

To protect yourself further:

Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
