Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Ewido Guard from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Open Ewido and deselect the guard option.

Also please disable SpywareGuard for the same reason.

Please open Spybot S & D, and turn off Resident Teatimer. Do this by clicking Mode at the top of the screen, choose Advanced Mode then Tools and then Resident and unchecking Teatimer. It will hinder our attempts to clear out some files that need to be removed.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those three programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Hoster

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

NvCplScan

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

NvCplScan

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

I notice that you have MSN Messenger plus installed. The file msgplus.exe is distributed as a third party MSN extension. However it is also spyware if installed with the sponsor programme it offers to install. If this optional sponsor programme was installed, this process monitors your browsing habits and distributes the data back to the author's servers for analysis. This also prompts advertising pop-ups.

Unless you definitely know that this programme is NOT your problem, I suggest that you uninstall it, reboot normally, and download a fresh copy, but this time read the EULA and do not grant permission for the third party software.

Please run Hoster (just double click it to open). Choose the Restore Original Hosts button and press OK.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

• Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
• In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
• Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  
• Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Hi again Phil,

thankyou sooo much for your help so far... unfortunately I am still getting pop ups all over the place...

I've had a couple of problems so far...
a) I'm not sure if it matters but my computer for some reason has 2 seperate directories for my (aaron's) documents and settings, and all users' documents and settings.... i'm not sure if this classes as having more than one user or not... Any info on how to get rid of this feature of win xp would be great since i absolutely hate having things saved in 2 start menus etc....

b) when it came to the Killbox stuff...
firstly th file name's wouldn't copy across.... when i tried to enter them by hand (making tripple sure all characters were correct (including case), i ended up with the error "Pending file rename operations Registry Data has been removed by and external process"... i have no idea what that means and am not sure if it is a good or a bad thing.

Hello again Aaron

We don't mention the F (format) word here, so I'm hoping you won't have to type it at any time.

To check your profiles, go to User Accounts in the Control Panel. Make sure that you are listed there and that you have Admin rights. If there are others there, make sure they do NOT have admin rights, if you want to you can delete all others and Windows will place a folder on your desktop with their files in it, that's up to you. From my perspective, if there are more users, then I have to clean those logs too.

Anyway, it is strange that some people seem to have problems with Killbox in the copying of file names. The message you received is OK. Please continue with the next bit.

Close any programmes you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Extra note... after reboot and logging in, normally a screen will pop up and perform the rest of the fix and notepad opens automatically afterwards.
If that doesn't happen, you'll have to do it manually, so open your L2M-folder which is present on your desktop and doubleclick second.bat.
Let it run and notepad (log.txt) will open then. Copy and paste the contents of it in your next reply with a new hijackthislog.

Hello again Aaron

Just the one file to get rid of; I was a little surprised it didn't go in the last sweep. We'll get rid using a dummy file.

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: NetCache - C:\WINDOWS\system32\i4600ejmehoa0.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

• Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
• In the Killbox programme, select the Replace on Reboot and Use Dummy option.
• Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\i4600ejmehoa0.dll

• Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  
• Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Hi there,

I ran hijack this and "fixed" the 020 etc. file

When it came to the killbox part i recieved the same error message i had previously ended up with about the file already having been removed from the registry by another program or something...

My computer is still getting lots of pop-ups...

Hello Aaron

The 020 entry is changing its identity to stop it from being deleted. It is the latest VX2 infection and for some reason refused to budge when we did the fix. Please confirm that you are the only profile with Admin rights and that Ewido Guard and Spy Guard are definitely disabled.

Please run the last fix again using the dummy in Killbox, but change the file name to whatever is showing on HJT at the time.

Also, did you uninstall and download a fresh sponsor-free Messenger Plus? I just checked the thread and realise that you didn't confirm it anywhere.

Also, this latest version of Spy Sweeper is reputedly awesome.

Download the Trial Version Spy Sweeper it is a 14-day trial.

• Install it.
• Once the program is installed, it will open.
• It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
• Once the definitions are installed, reboot into Safe Mode. Reopen Spysweeper, click Sweep Now on the left side.
• Click the Start button.
• When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
• Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
• It will remove all of the items found.
• Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
• Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
• Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.

Please post a fresh HJT log and the log from Spy Sweeper.

hi there,

was quite sure that i did not install the adware that came with messenger plus however i have removed the program anyway as a precaution.

my account is the only admin account on the computer, the only other listed account is the "guest account" which is disabled but still for some reason keeps doubles of just about everything in "shared program folders" or something...

I can still see the 020 entry in your log. I have just checked your running processes and Ewido Guard is running. Please open Ewido and remove guard option. Reboot and run Spy Sweeper again.

Please post both logs again after the sweeper and reboot.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

I would get rid of Hoster and Killbox. You have only 14-day trial of SpySweeper so I would use it and then decide if you wish to but it. Ewido can be used as an "on demand" scanner for as long as you like, be sure to update before each use. CCleaner is an excellent cleaning programme that deserves to be used every day.

BTW, SpySweeper got the VX2 infection, I thought it should. It would appear as though HJt did it, but SpySweeper releases the hook allowing HJT to work.
