As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a little malware and the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection, with ConHook (aren’t you the lucky one!). With your luck, don’t buy any lottery tickets, and be careful crossing roads. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

Firstly could you please disable Ewido Guard from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Open Ewido and deselect the Guard option.

To start please download the following programme/s, we will run it/them later. Please save it/them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CWShredder

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Please download
cwsserviceemove.reg file and save it to your desktop

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

• Now open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.
  It should look like this

• At this point press enter once.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

I did notice in your response that I should let you know if I have a family PC. In safe mode my options are administrator or my name, which the computer always signs in under. Does this matter in the response you gave me to the fix? I tried to go under my name in safe mode to VundoFix folder but the option I have where you say "double click on Kill Vundo.bat only has killvundo (no .bat) when I press enter with that, my computer does nothing but freeze. If there is proper etiquette to ask you questions besides e-mail I apologize and would appreciate your correcting my poor manners!

You have single identity PC, no problem, the Administrator always appears as an extra in safe mode, that's normal.

If you do not have Vundo.bat, then your download is corrupted. Please discard the download you have and get a fresh one. These are the files you should see:

Thanks for the quick response! I cannot get the activescan to scan. It stops and freezes at Windows
system32 ntdll.dll. I tried a few times and that is the best I can get. Followed directions otherwise and here is what I have:

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Hi again!
Ok, followed instructions except could not find C:\WINDOWS\System32|mllmn.dll in windows explorer. Got rid of other one (partypoker.net) I still am getting the virus warning continually popping up for TROJ CRYPT. U in C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmn.dll and it is telling me quarantine action was unsuccessful and to manually delete file if not needed. Would love to but can't find it!!

Hello again Donna

That infection is called ConHook. It is responsible for installing Vundo B onto your PC. Normally it gets deleted as Vundo takes over, but for some reason, it has failed to happen on this occasion.

The fix for ConHook is quite involved. If you feel you cannot complete it, let me know and I'll think of another way round the problem.

Read it through a few times first, it is not that bad.

Please print this page for reference.

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from Process Explorer

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from KillBox

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmn.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmn.dll 's under winlogon click OK.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmn.dll then click the kill button.

Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run HijackThis and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00DBDAC8-4691-4797-8E6A-7C6AB89BC441} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmn.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: mllmn - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mllmn.dll

Now click fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now run KillBox and paste this line below into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X Button, say YES to the 1st prompt but NO to reboot now

C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllmn.dll

Then on KillBox top bar, press tools/delete temp files and follow those prompts and say YES to everything

Then let your PC reboot

After your computer has rebooted please run Hijackthis again and post a new HijackThis log.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

YOU ARE MY HERO!!! PC-Cillin was able to quarentine the file and no more virus warnings!! I appreciate your help SO much!! One last question....how much of what I have downloaded should I keep on my computer (ewido, trojan guard etc.)? Once again I greatly appreciate your help and simple directions!!
