Hello Geeks: Glad I found you. I considered myself at least moderately geekish myself, so this one is really frustrating me. couple weeks ago, I absent-mindedly and stupidly clicked "yes" on a "do you want to load me" question from a purported spyware checking program who turned out to be spyware itself. I've been getting a lot of redirections and hijacking to aggravating websites, mostly trying to sell me spyware killers. I repeatedly ran Spybot and MS Beta (Giant), both of whom found and fixed something on every run, but the problem keeps coming back. At startup, I get a RUNDLL warning: "An exception occurred while trying to run C:\windows\system32\mklogmgr.dll",Umonitor" , though the name of the .dll file changes each time. Then I'll get redirections and popups. I followed all the instructions on your "do this first" page yester day with one exception --- I loaded Windows Service Pack 2 while I had this problem, and I'm hesitent to unload now that it's been running for a few days. All the programs you had me run found problems, with the exception of CWShredder, which found nothing. This is probably a pretty common problem for you. Here's the log from my Hijack This scan. 2. Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location.
3. Double-click on KillBox.exe.
4. Click "Replace on Reboot" and check the "Use Dummy" box.
5. Paste this file into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box.

The most annoying thing VX2 does is screw up the Recycle Bin.
It does this by placing a special Windows file called desktop.ini into C:\RECYCLER.
A desktop.ini is a special way to completely customize a certain folder.
In this case, the user will not be able to see any of the contents inside the Recycle Bin.
The user also will not receive a confirmation notice upon deleting a file. It will be deleted without warning.

I like to delete the HOSTS file, delete all of Killbox's dummy files, and then clear the Temp files.

Finally, you need to restore the debug policy that VX2 denies to the administrator.

There are a number of methods for doing these things but I prefer using Killbox/VX2Finder to do everything.

* Download VX2Finder.
* Double-click on VX2Finder.exe.
* Click "Restore Policy".
* In the File menu click "Exit".
* Double-click on KillBox.exe.
* In the File menu click "Delete all Dummy files".
* In the Tools menu click "Delete Temp Files".
* Choose "Standard File Kill" if not already selected.
* Paste these files one by one into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box.
o C:\RECYCLER\desktop.ini
o C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS
* Click the "Delete File" button which looks like a stop sign.
* Click "Yes" at the Confirm Delete prompt.
* It should give you a successful "File was deleted" prompt for each one.

You have fixed the infection. Now all you need is a new HijackThis log

- I clicked on the hyperlink you sent for Pocket Killbox and couldn't get to that site. Instead a googled up pocket Killbox and downloaded it from elsewhere. Ran it and followed your intructions
- Upon reboot, got an error message: The application DLL c:windows\system32\eapaiz.dll is not a valid windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette
- Giant spyware program detected VXL to to load. Didn't allow that
- Ran find.bat and got the following output. Will follow rest of instruction after posting this

Update: I have Microsoft Giant Beta Spyware detector configured to run automatically overnight. It did and found and fixed two items, so things have changed. I haven't done anything more awaiting your reply but there is Good news and bad news:
- Good: effects-wise, I think it may be gone. I haven't experience any popups or redirections in the last couple of days. In fact, if I deliberately type in a bad URL (which always redirected me to an adware site), I go normally to google. At least, it's better
- Bad: my MS Beta Giant spyware detector runs each night and still finds VX2 infections, which I remove in the morning. Also the attached findit log, which I just ran, still shows guard.tmp on my machine. Also, there still appears to be a redirect in the hijack log

Save this text as FixVX2.reg. Make sure the "Save as type:" is "All Files (*.*)" and save it to your desktop.

Double-click on FixVX2.reg. When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click Yes.

* Download VX2Finder
* Double-click on VX2Finder.exe.
* Click "Restore Policy".
* In the File menu click "Exit".
* Double-click on KillBox.exe.
* In the File menu click "Delete all Dummy files".
* In the Tools menu click "Delete Temp Files".
* Choose "Standard File Kill" if not already selected.
* Paste these files one by one into the top "Full Path of File to Delete" box.

* Click the "Delete File" button which looks like a stop sign.
* Click "Yes" at the Confirm Delete prompt.

Thanks Coachwife: Good to hear from you again. I didn't quite make it through your instructions because it wasn't going according to plan. I saved the registry script as an all files type, ran it, and got a message from Registry Editor: "Cannont import C:....\FixVX2.reg: The specified file is not a registry script. You can only import binary registry files from the registry editor"

Went ahead and ran VX2Finder and it gave me a message that started out with "This will reset the Se Debug Priveledge for administrators .....", then it asked for a reboot. I didn't reboot and quit at the point. Does that sound likes it's going right? Btw, Windows Beta Giant ran as scheduled last night and found nothing.
