Dear Malware Removal Expert,

My computer has recently been infected with the Winfixer malware. Almost every time I use my computer I receive a constant stream of pop-up adds for Winfixer 2005, Winantispyware 2005, and Winantivirus 2005. In addition, my computer has been very slow and sometimes unresponsive. When my computer has frozen, I hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete in order to check the Task Manager and I have found that the CPU usage has been at 100%. Due to such sluggish performance I have been unable to use my computer much.

It appears that none of the security software on my computer is able to remove Winfixer. A scan with Spybot only revealed a tracking cookie with the name Winfixer, but Spybot did not remove Winfixer itself. Microsoft Antispyware recently detected an adware program named "Virtumondu", which it attempted to remove. However, subsequent scans have shown that every time it removes the program, "Virtumondu" just comes right back. In addition, Norton Internet Security 2005 (Antispyware Edition) has detected a trojan named "Trojan.Vundo.B" that it says is located at "C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll." Since Norton is unabel to remove this trojan, I now receive an annoying notice from Norton that will not go away. I assume that Winfixer, Virtumondo, and Trojan.Vundo.B are all related.

The remainder of this post contains my HijackThis log. I hope that the information that I provided is of use in removing Winfixer and restoring my computer to good health.

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box and/or Uncheck Resident.
Close Spybot.

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Reverse the process when you’ve carried out the advise.

Remove MyWaySearch
Move to Start > Settings > Control Panel
Double click Add/Remove Programs.
Within Add/Remove programs click the "Install/Uninstall" tab or click the "Change or Remove Programs" button.
Within this section you will see a listing of programs that are currently installed that support this feature. If the program I’m advising you to uninstall is listed within this list, highlight it and click the Add/Remove or uninstall option or button.

Dear g2i2r4,

Thank you for your prompt response and clear instructions, which I followed to the best of my abilities.

I was able to remove My Way Search via the Control Panel.

I then successfuly ran killvundo.bat while in safe mode.

However, when HijackThis opened, I did not see that first item that you instructed me to check:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll

I was only able to find the second item; however, after giving the file name exactly as you had written it, HijackThis displayed "file missing". The entry looked like this:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyv - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll (file missing)

I still placed a check next to this entry and then pressed "Fix Checked".

After closing HijackThis, I was unable to turn off my computer even by pressing the power button. I had to unplug the power cord so that I could reboot the system.

After rebooting, I ran CleanUp! and then the Panda Active Scan. The Panda scan found an adware program called Startpage.aiw with two files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqr.dll

I had a hard time copying the Panda Active Scan results, but I have included what I could. The remainder of this post contains the Panda Active Scan results, the text from vundofix.txt, and my new HijackThis log.

Please again disable Spybot and AntiSpyware.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Make sure to reverse the process when you are done.

Use Windows Explorer to move to this folder:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\
Remove all instances of these files:
pmkhe
ehkmp
vtsqr
rqstv

Close Windows Explorer when you are done.

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyv - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll (file missing)

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

See if you can rerun Panda and safe the log.

Dear g2i2r4,

I searched through C:\WINDOWS\system32 for the files that you listed. Only two of those files were present on my computer. The two files that I deleted were:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhe.dll

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqr.dll

After deleting these files, I used HijackThis to fix the entry that you specified:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebyv - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebyv.dll (file missing)

I then ran the Panda Active Scan, which detected the following:

Dear g2i2r4,

Thanks to you my computer is running very well! I have not experienced any annoying Winfixer pop-ups. Also, my computer has not frozen or been sluggish. I can once again use my computer normally.

If I may trouble you, I have a few final questions.

1) As I had stated before, Microsoft Antispyware had detected "Virtumondo" but was unable to remove it. I recently noticed that Microsoft Antispyware had quarantined "Virtumondo", so I permanently removed it today. After taking this action, is there any need for me to post another HijackThis log?

2) I do not know if it is important, but I have several Windows XP User Accounts on my computer. Is the malware removed from all of them?

3) After installing all the programs required to fix my malware problem, I now have a number of icons on my Desktop that seem redundant. Of course I am going to keep all of these programs, but is it safe to delete such seemingly unnecassary files as hijackthis.zip, vundofix.exe, and cleanup40.exe?

In response to your last post, I would certainly appreciate any tips and advice that you can offer. I never want to have another problem like this.

You can remove hijackthis (including the zip on your desktop) and vundofix. I recommend keeping Cleanup! around to remove temporary files and prefetch files every now and again.
As for this account I don't need a new HijackThis log.

This malware should be removed for all users. But I you want me to I can have a look at a log for the other users too. Just let me know.

As MyWaySearch is removed from the computer, you can remove these entries using HijackThis:

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

  Re-enable system restore with the instructions from the tutorial above
  
  
• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & Hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware – Download and install Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
