Hello all,

I have the dreaded Winfixer popup and have ran a Norton Scan, Ad-aware, Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware and Microsoft malicious tool remover and it is still present. It will popup after a reboot and will force me to go to the website. Additionally, not sure if this is related but explorer.exe was running at 99-100% causing my computer to run extremly slow, although after running the above scans that seems to have gone away, I do have a feeling it will come back though. I have posted my hiJackThis log below and someone can help. I have read other threads and have already downloaded the vundofix tool.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from its zipped archive; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please open Spybot S & D, and turn off Resident Teatimer. Do this by clicking Mode at the top of the screen, choose Advanced Mode then Tools and then Resident and unchecking Teatimer. It will hinder our attempts to clear out some files that need to be removed.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those two programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Have you done something not in the fix? The reason I ask is because there is an error message in your log, but the HJT log does not reflect it.

The error message received may refer to one of two things, either you are not the only profile on this PC with Administrator rights or Microsoft Antispyware is still running and refusing to allow alterations to the registry.

Can I see a fresh HJt log please together with any comments on the points above.

Hmm,

When I go into user accounts I only see an HP Administrator account, although when I tried to go into safe mode I had an option of Administrator or HP Adminsistrator so I'm confused. Could it be because I did not go into safe mode? I just shut doun Micrsoft Antispy and here is the new HJT log:

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one (Windows XP has a built-in firewall).

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep your Windows, antispyware and antivirus updated.

This is a real service to the internet community! Can I please ask you a couple of questions? My isp offers free Mcafee VirusScan and Mcafee Personal Firewall Plus with all updates, I am currently running Norton Virus and Firewall with no updates, should I switch? And what do you think of Microsoft AntiSpyware? Also, I have to manually start Microsoft AntiSpyware each time after rebooting, I have it checked to start automatically within the software but I think I may have disabled it through msconfig.

Hello again

An out of date AV programme is useless, so McAfee AV and PFW sounds like a very good deal to me.

On the subject of MSAS, I like it and use it myself, but I have other programmes for on demand scanning, my favourite being Ewido.

I just looked at your 1st log and MSAS looked to be correct there. If you are planning on choosing this to be your on demand AS scanner, remember to enable MSAS.

If you are familiar with MSCONFIG, check to ensure that MSAS is listed in the STARTUP list and that NORMAL STARTUP is selected under the GENERAL tab.

I have msconfig set for selective startup because it seems to boot faster and run smoother, are you suggesting that I start in normal mode and let everything run? I was able to find that gcasServ.exe is the startup item for MSAS and will make sure it is checked when I get home.

Additionally, do you think my prior infections were causing exploer.exe to run at 99% or could that be something else?

These are the two options for safe mode: During a boot, keep tapping the F8 key and choose Safe mode from the advanced menu or go to Start>Run>type in Msconfig>hit ENTER>Boot.ini and check off SafeBoot>Apply, reboot.

If you boot to safe mode and a black screen, press ctrl alt and delete at the same time. Click on file then new task(run...) In the Open box type msconfig and press enter. If msconfig opens click the boot.ini tab at the top then uncheck /SAFEBOOT Then click on the general tab at the top and make sure Normal startup is checked. Click Apply then Ok The computer should now prompt you to reboot. Hopefully you will be able to get into normal windows now.

If you still cannot get to safe mode then it is possible that malware may have disabled it, members of staff are currently working on the problem.

OK cool, I'll try to see if I can get into safe mode just for the heck of it when I get home. Thank you soo much for your help, I really appreciate it. If I can't get into safe mode I'll let you know. I'm sending you a sawbuck ( $10 ).

Thanks again for all your help.

I think I have another problem....I deleted Norton and installed McAfee (what a headache that was) and now when I try to restart I get a message that says a program is still trying to shut down, and then when Windows it starts up it will sometimes freeze and I have manually shut down. Additionally McAfee sometimes does not start automaticly and when I go into its options to check why Windows will freeze.

McAfee did 2 scans and both times found viruses. Hope you can help me.
