Hey all,

My computer wont run IE and is coming up with the a cannot connect/DNS error, but ontop of that MSN wont run now and i have been gettin msg's comin up that smss.exe has encountered a problem and shutdown, and asks to send error report.

Because of this my first thoguht was to open up norton and have a look at the firewall settings, because that was part of the solution last time i posted here... but i cant get into norton as it comes up with the same encountered problem screen that smss.exe does...

Up to this point i have run all the programs that i was told to run last time (AdAware, Spybot S&D, Spywareblaster, Ewido, Winsockfix etc, and ontop of that have done a tad of reading and googling found that the smss.exe problem may be a duplicate spyware file....

So i downloaded a security version of task manager where you can end any process and found a duplicate of smss.exe that wasn't in the system32 folder... got rid of it and the smss.exe error has disappeared for the moment.

But i still cant get IE or MSN to open, and cant get into Norton to play with firewall settings... and whats driving me mad is that mIRC and Kazaa Lite both open and run no worries but i cant get the others to run...

Sorry for such a long message, just tryin to get as much info to you guys so you can hopefully help us out

Have posted latest hijack this log on too

Hello,

Check and fix this entry in hijackthis:

O4 - Startup: csrss.lnk = ?

Are you using another browser to post this log for the moment? It's only your IE that won't open? If so, what browser are you using now to surf with?
Aready tried to uninstall Norton Internet Security and reinstall again?

In what folder was the bad smss.exe present?

Hey,

Im on a different computer (Sisters) to access this site cause IE wont run on my comp, as well as MSN and Norton.

Not completely sure where the bad smss.exe file was, but im 100% sure it wasn't in WINDOWS or system32 folders... And i searched a bit on the net first to make sure that i was doin the right thing when deleting the smss.exe duplicate. Hopefully it wasn't my stupidity that [bleep]ed it... :tazz:

When trying to delete the entry in hijack this, its comes up with the following error message:

Unexpected Error Occured
Error #52 (Bad Filename or Number) in Sub GetlongPath (?exe)

Please send a report to [email protected], mentioning what you were doing, and what version of windows you have.

This message has been copied to your clipboard

After clicking ok, i get this error message:

Unable to delete the file

04- Startup csrss.lnk

The file may be in use. Use the task manager to shutdown the program and run hijackthis again to delete the file.

Also with Norton... The message i get when i try open the program is one of those ones that try and send an error report to windows... Synmatec integrator is the title at the top of the error message when it comes up.

Thats about as much descirption i can give to find the problem....

Thanks for the help

Ok, I'm going to ask you another log now.
Because you can't connect to the internet, I can't let you download anything.

Open Hijackthis.
Click 'config' (bottom right) > Misc Tools > Generate StartUpListlog
Check the two boxes next to it:
List also minor sections (full)
List empty sections (complete)
Click Generate StartupListlog

Post the startuplist in your next reply.

Edit... extra addition.

Can you look in next folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Look for csrss.lnk

rightclick on it and choose 'properties'
You'll find the field: target
Copy and paste what's in the target-field in your next reply as well.

If you can't find it.. perform next:

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Hey,

I have produced the Startuplist from hijackthis like asked.

When tryin to save the look.bat... i followed the instructions and entered the command in notepad, but when i open the saved bat file on the desktop, it opens and closes automatically... doesn't open notepad with some text in it like you said. Only thing i can think is that i entered the command line wrong in notepad....

As for the addition you added, i found the csrss file and checked the properties but its got no target,
completely blank... So im unable to paste what is written there either.

So heres the Hijackthis log, hopefully the other things you asked for are my error and not the computer...

Cheers

Hi,

Nothing suspicious here. I am more and more starting to think it's norton causing this.
It's not the first time it acts likes this.. We can try to uninstall it.
But before doing so, I want to be sure first nothing else is hiding.

You'll need to download some programs via the good computer first and transfer it to the bad computer.

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure....light/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
leave [X]scan through windows explorer checked,
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there... like "wbemtest.exe"
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)

Download winpfind

Reboot in SAFE MODE !! Important !!
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key

Doubleclick winpfind.exe
Click start Scan.
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Let it finish the job.

Reboot back to normal mode.

Can you also look in next folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Look for csrss.lnk

rightclick on it and choose 'properties'
You'll find the field: target
Copy and paste what's in the target-field in your next reply, together with the blacklight log and de log from winpfind.

Click OK.

Hey,

I Downloaded and ran both programs, running WinpFind in safe mode...

When running Blacklight Beta i accepted the aggrement, it ran the scan then went to fix them, showing me 36 processes running, but no option to save a log... and no log at all turned up on the desktop. (looking for a fsbl.xxxxxxx.log correct)

As for the csrss.lnk, i again looked in the C:\Documents and Settings\Your Username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder and checked the properties... again no target so iam unable to paste it...

And i have set it to show all files and the other two option unchecked, so i know thats not why its not showing a target...

In the above folder, it only shows up as csrss not csrss.lnk, dunno if that helps...

Heres the log from WinPfind

Ack!

I see now with what you are dealing with and I don't really have good news for you.. :tazz:
Take a look at this: http://www.k7computi...doorLandisC.htm
Also look here: http://www.trendmicr.....HOD.D&VSect=P

This is what it does:

# Run a shell command
# End processes
# Download and delete files
# Install an IRC daemon
# Download updates to the worm
# Spread through MSN Messenger
# Patch the system driver TCPIP.SYS to allow many simultaneous connections
# Shutdown and restart the compromised computer
# Run a hacktool
# Steal passwords
# Perform denial of service attacks

I am going to be honest in here.... We can't restore this for 100% because the damage it causes can be huge. And we can't be 100% sure, even if we tried to delete all responsible files, that there is still something hidden there or morphed in a meanwhile.
There could be associated Registry entries that may never be discovered, and there may also be super hidden files remaining and spawning the malware.
As you also see, it steals passwords and spreads it further via your computer very fast.

The decision is yours ofcourse, but If I were you, I would backup any important data, format your system and reinstall windows. I normally don't recommend reformat/reinstall, but this is a different case we are dealing with.

I prefered to tell you this (I could actually just give you instructions how to remove it), because I think it would be irrisponsible not to tell you the consequenses of your situation.

I also suggest the following info:

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063

I helped you before with another log and I see your XP isn't still updated to SP2 and I strongly recommended to update though. If you were having SP2, you wouldn't had this problem at all, because your windows would be patched then to prevent such infections.
It could be possible that your version of windows is illegal, that's why I strongly recommend to obtain a legal version of XP, so you can update to SP2.

But as I already said, the decision is yours. Just let me know. :)

Hey,

Alright ive had a think about it, and as much as i hate the thought of havin to do it, i think starting over again is the only way to solve the problem...

So i think is backup/reinstall, just because i wanna be back at 100%..

This is the process i was thinkin of using, im just fearful of copying over the virus... as i have alot of games,movies,mp3's, files etc that i would like to keep:

Firstly backup both my hard drives with everythin i want onto dads external 200gig... so then ive got my stuff.

Secondly format the computer, have everythin clean then reinstall with a new version of windows, then installing service packs so this doesn't happen again.

Then once windows is up again install and run all the programs that you suggested in this and the other posts (ad Aware, Spyboot, ewido) so that the computer is up to date with protection from all this crap from the moment i get net connection.

Then its just time to copy over all my folders again from the 200gig and i should be right...

But in doing this i just want to make sure that im not goin to just transfer the virus over, leaving me with the only option i have is to start clean with no backed up files, which will [bleep] me, lots of downloading....

But I just want your opinion on the method, as i dont wanna start the irreversiable process if youve got a better way about it lol..

Thanks for all this help

Hello,

It's not only to restore your system, but mainly to get rid of every trace of that nasty piece of malware which already caused a lot of damage and causes other computers damage as well.

Yes, I understand your fear that you will copy the virus... So don't backup your entire drives, just backup the important data, files, MP3's, movies you would like to keep. Only the things you know.
Format your system, reinstall Windows -- you'll have a nice and clean install now. Immediately update to SP2, then install a firewall and Antivirus and download and install the programs again you were having before.
I understand the downloading and reinstalling stuff will take a lot of time, but you don't have to do this all in once. I mean, when you need the program, then download and install it.

You'll be amazed how fast your system will run again and malware free -- a fresh start. :tazz:

A good idea is... always keep a backup of your important files... and leave the backup where it is. Only replace what you need at that moment.

Success. :)

Glad I could help.
I am sorry I could not be more of a help , but I just don't see a point in cleaning your system from the crap when it is so critically compromised. Even if things would work afterwards again after cleaning the malware from your system, I would never ever call your system 'clean' again, because with those infections.... nope, you can't be clean again and the risk of getting reinfected would be very high.
So the format and reinstall is the best solution. Then you can say you're clean! :tazz:

Let me know afterwards how things went. :)
