SpySheriff: Start Program Hourglass-No Internet

I am new here and posting for a friend that lives in another town. He has Windows XP Pro sp1a. He started getting the SpySheriff banner & ran his Cox Security (Authentium?) antivirus, antispyware and Ad-aware.

The computer crashed & when he rebooted the Start program just hourglassed and he can't access IE6.

Can only run programs using TaskManager > New Task.

Cox support had him remove their AV.

I downloaded WinSockfixxp, Lspfix, SmitRem, Cleanup3.0, HJT, Killbox, Ewildo, DelDomains, Trojanhunter to a CD for him on Sunday.

Ran sfc /scannow, Winsockfix, Smitrem, cleanup, ewildo and Trojan Hunter in safe mode but he still has the same problem.

Any help getting him past the Start Program hourglass and/or Internet access?
