Here follows my Hijackthis log. I have RR's EZ Armour Anti-Virus and Firewall installed ,but just recently. Previously I had AVG free, which caught about 11 viruses in a row several days ago, and several that it could not heal/delete. That was the day my laptop went haywire. I hope you can help. Now everytime I boot up or use Internet Explorer I get a message from Ewido stating it has caught "awtqo.dll" Path-C:\WINDOWS\system32; Infection-Spyware Virtumonde. i hit the clean button but it doesn't go away.
I followed the steps prescribed on your forum. CWShredder found a Look2 problem, which also returns after being cleaned.
I boutgh this laptop just about a year ago, and am wondering that if it is still under warranty- is this something Toshiba would/should deal with?
I am disabled- my computer is my lifeline; its the one thing I bought for myself with my settlement mony and there is no way that I can replace it. I really hope someone can help me out with this - it is driving me crazy!

I am new to the forum- and grateful to have found it. I have been reading through others' logs and fixes and from what I see, I recognize some of my own problems. I am tempted to try my own fix, but also a bit scared to do so... Can anyone give me an idea of what sort of timeframe I might expect to be waiting for a reply and help? A few days or a week?

Thanks!! Here is my new Hijackthis log. I uninstalled EZ Armour because it wasn't working properly, and installed AVG free. With the Virtumond bug, I don't really think it will help. I have also been gettin Winfixer popups..UGH! Originnal I had MacAfee through AOL, but customer service made a mistake on my billing and accidently suspended my service- it was that very day that all these terrible things happened to my computer!! • Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files

Well, so far so good- and many, many thanks. When I re-booted, before running Clean-Up and Active Scan there was some kind of glich - an error message I should have copied, but the Virtumond was gone. I'll know more on my next boot.

Hi Sam,
Re boot was ver, very slow, and i got the error message " an error has occurred while scanning IE Plugins. An Unexpected Problem was encountered. Error # 0x-80004003"
Everything seems to be Ok except that I think that there is still something there. Something appears and disappears quickly on my start bar as a small white box. This is something that was happening before. Let me know what you think of my results. And...thank-you, again for your time. TiA

We still have some more work to do. You should notice a faster startup once the legitimate prefetch files are replaced, after 3 reboots.

• Next click on "Open uninstall manager".
• Press the button 'save list'. It will open a Notepad file.

Both of them are normal and deal with graphics controls.

igfxtray.exe - Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon for graphics based upon the Intel chipsets (ie, i810). These chipsets are often included on motherboards. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel

igfxsrvc.dll - Intel® integrated graphics controller


Please uninstall these programs from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

**just a note FYI...after running the first fix, and then going into Spybot, Advanced Mode,System Startup- in that list the awtqo.dll little nasty was still running. After the second the second fix, I went in there to check and it is gone. Hooray!!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
