When windows xp boots up, is there a way (with the blue / green progress abr) to make this 1024 by 768 res, make it look better.

I am almost certain that there is no way to do this. While it is on, XP is loading your device drivers. Since your graphics driver is loading, there is no way to make it look better.

i have a 1280 by 1024 screen, it looks bad

have you updated your video drivers? the video driver is one of the first ones to load so it actually does have an effect on the splash screen
