OK lets look at some hidden areas
  • Download WinPFind
  • Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
  • Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
  • Dont do anything with it yet!
Reboot into Safe Mode
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
  • Click "Start Scan"
  • It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!
  • Once the Scan is Complete[list=1]
  • Go to the WinPFind folder
  • Locate WinPFind.txt
  • Place those results in the next post!

Ok - downloaded and ran this program and here are the results

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Lets try this

Please run this online virus scan:
Panda Active Scan You need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
  • Once you get to the Panda site, scroll down a bit and click on Scan your PC
  • A new window will appear; click on Check Now!
  • A new window will appear; fill in the boxes (Country, State, email addy)
  • Click on Scan Now! >
If you have never used ActiveScan before, you will be prompted to install an ActiveX control (asinst.cab) : click on Install. Panda will install the component, and then install the latest signature files.
  • From "Select a device to scan...", choose "My Computer"
  • Allow the scan to run. It'll take a while.
  • When complete, click on "See Report", and then on "Save report"; save it to a convenient location.
  • I will need you to post that report in your next reply; simply open the text file, then copy/paste the content here. Also post a new Hijack log

Hi

Ran Panda and here the report file is below. I did want to point out that the problem is located in that Lavan folder I was questioning earlier (seems to have a few issues in there). This is also a little bizarre because I have run the panda scan a number of times previous to today and nothing has ever shown (even though the Lavan file was present then too - and was actually one of the reason I ran it). Anyhow, here is the log of the scanL:

Incident Status Location

Hacktool:HackTool/Scansql.B No disinfected C:\WINNT\system32\Lavan\scansql.exe.tcf
Here is the new Hijack this log as well

Go ahead and delete the Lavan folder. The Rdriv was probably hiding that folder from the scans.

Let me know how it goes :tazz:

Hi

sorry to get back to you so late - had a busy weekend (santa claus parade and all LOL).

Well, I deleted the Lavan folder and restarted the computer and everything seems to be running okay so far.

Ran Adaware, Spybot, Ewido, Trojan Hunter and AVG and all is clear.

Did you want me to run another Hijack this log?

Thanks so much for all your help - it was/is very much appreciated!!!!

Hello angel2infinity

santa clause parade already. Ack Guess I need to start the christmas shopping :)

No,no hijack needed. If all those scans turned up clean thats a pretty good sign. :)

Congratulations

your system is clean :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
