1. Download SysInternals PSExec to your desktop

Click on PsExec.zip to open the file
Extract psexec.exe it to c:\Windows\System32.

2. Launch Notepad

Copy/paste the content of the codebox below, Including the word REGEDIT4, into a new text file.
Save it as c:\fixme.reg.

3. Choose "Run..." from the startmenu

Type the following into the Run Box: "psexec –s -i –d regedit.exe c:\fixme.reg" (without the quotes).
Press enter.
The file you just saved will now be imported.
Answer yes to the questions that will appear on your screen.

4. REBOOT your system

5. Rerun "Silent Runners", "Registry Search", and "HijackThis" as previouly instructed.

Save the three logs
Post them into your reply.

The regfix was not successfull. We will do it the old way

1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type "regedit" without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP. Export the file to your Desktop.

If a restore of the registry is required in case of emergency, just click on the exported regfile on your desktop, and answer YES to the question whether you want to merge this file with the registry. Wait until you get a message saying something like Merge Successfull.

2. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word REGEDIT4. Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg.

Hi Trevuren,

Hopefully I have done everything right this time! The only thing I'm not sure about is the Reg Search, see the line in red below, which files do you want me to extract, the txt files (History & options) in the Reg Search folder (which is opened with Winrar) or another file? Maybe I did it right, check the log below!

4. Download Registry Search.zip by Bobbi Flekman and Save it to your desktop.
Extract it to your desktop.
Create a New Folder on your desktop and name it RegSearch
Click on the Registry Search.zip icon on your desktop to open the program.

Click regsearch.exe to start the program.
Click on "Import" and Select the file "Options.txt" that you created above.
Now, EXTRACT all the files to this newly created folder.
Click "OK" and Registry Search will search the Registry and report what it finds.
Post the results into your next reply.

Unfortunately we have to start from the top again. This is not going to be an easy one Please repeat the same initial procedures but omit the downloading of programs as you have them already.

1. Download WinKRootKitRemover to your desktop.

Click the icon to open the program
Then, RUN and START
Post the log it creates into your next reply.

2. Download Silent Runners.vbs to your desktop.

Click on the Silent Runners.vbs icon to open the program
Then click OPEN and YES in the next screen.
Let the program run its couse. It will tell you when it has finished its work
This will generate a text file on your desktop called "Startup Programs ...".
Open the text file.
Copy/Paste and Post the content into your next reply.

3. Launch Notepad

Copy/paste the codebox below into a new text file.
Save it as Options.txt on your Desktop.

Filter=KVDLU

4. Download Registry Search.zip by Bobbi Flekman and Save it to your desktop.

Extract it to your desktop.
Create a New Folder on your desktop and name it RegSearch
Click on the Registry Search.zip icon on your desktop to open the program.
Click regsearch.exe to start the program.
Click on "Import" and Select the file "Options.txt" that you created above.
Now, EXTRACT all the files to this newly created folder.
Click "OK" and Registry Search will search the Registry and report what it finds.
Post the results into your next reply.

5. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG, and POST the following logs into your reply:

HJT
WinKRootKitRemover
Silent Runners
Registry Search

Before repeating the tests, let's clean up your log:

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Note: If Lime Wire is not a recently acquired version of the program, then it should be UNINSTALLED via ADD/Remove Programs and the Folder Deleted through Windows Explorer

First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
- Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
- Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
- Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
- Close the window with ok
Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.
Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: ONSPEED - {8B79EE88-E62D-4AA8-B530-CC357BA112B7} - blank (file missing)

Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.
Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode
- Restart the computer.
- As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
- Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
- Press Enter.
Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\stxvsxst<==Folder and content
ALCXMNTR.EXE<==You will have to do a Seach for this one
Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE
Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.

Hi Trevuren,

Do I really have to delete limewire, I paid for the Limewire Pro about 3 months ago, not that expensive I know but if I have to delete it I will! Another quick question, if you want I can post it in a different forum, why won't my pc restart itself anymore, its been doing it for a while now? When shutting down or restarting, it just says shutting down, I have to keep my finger on the power button to turn it off & then turn it on manually. Is it because programs are not shutting down properly, if so how do I find which prog it is? Sorry I'm all questions aren't I?

3 months is "recent" in my books.

Now please follow the instructions posted in Post #21 as requested.

We must finish eradicating the infection totally before starting to reconstruct the malfunctioning elements.

Your log is still showing some minor traces of infection but we will clear this up during the above preocedures.

Hi

I'm getting a message box with WinRootkitRemover now: The WinRootkit trojan service could not be found in the registry! The program will now exit. On notepad the log is:

The rootkit itself appears to ne gone but some registry entries are not responding to the fix. I am going to ask the expert in the matter to have a little look at what has been done and suggest any changes to our method, if required.

Hang in there, this may take a couple of days. Go on using your computer

Good Morning Goldfish2, mind you by the time I post this it will probably be afternoon.

For your information, the specialist looked in on our work and we "appear" to have done everything correctly. He was kind enough to come up with another solution to our problem which I think will resolve the problem. So here goes my friend:

1. Create a new Folder on your desktop and name it DACL. We will be leaving it empty for now.

2. Please download the RegDACL.zip file to your desktop from :HERE

Click on RegDACL.zip to open the file
From the zip program menu, choose Actions>>Select All
Then, from the tasbar, click on "EXTRACT" and a new window will apppear.
Make sure that the "All files/folders in Archive" option is selected.
In the "Extract to" type box, select the newly created DACL folder as the destination.
Now click EXTRACT and close the window
Verify that all the files have in fact been extracted to the new folder.

3. Open Notepad.

Copy/Paste the content of the codebox below into the Notepad file:

RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINIK /GGE:F

RegDACL HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINIK] /GGE:F

RegDACL\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_WINIK] /GGE:F

Save the file in the DACL Folder as FixReg.bat and as "All Files" as far as file type.
Locate the FixReg.bat and click on it.
EXIT the folder

4. A. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type "regedit" without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP. Export the file to your Desktop.

If a restore of the registry is required in case of emergency, just click on the exported regfile on your desktop, and answer YES to the question whether you want to merge this file with the registry. Wait until you get a message saying something like Merge Successfull.

B. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word REGEDIT4. Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg.

The above Registry and Batch files were written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. They are NOT to be used on another computer, as they may cause damage that could result in a format!

4. Reboot your computer.

5. Finally, rerun the following programs and post the logs produced into your reply:

You got them all.

1. Please rerun WinKitRemover one last time and post the log. If it comes out negative you can delete the program.

2. Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
* Click Start, Programs and Accessories and open Windows Explorer.
* Select a hard drive from the left hand side of the Windows Explorer window.
* Select View the Entire contents of this drive

Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE

Now with all the items selected and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window and Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to Start To Safe Mode Using the F8 method in Windows 98/98SE/ME

To start your computer in Safe Mode:
*turn the computer on
*as the computer restarts, press and hold down the Ctrl key until the Windows 98 startup menu appears. (This also works with the F8 key following the same steps)
*Choose Safe mode from the startup menu,
*press Enter
*Windows starts in Safe mode.
*Restart your computer when finished troubleshooting

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders (with all their content), and DELETE them (if they are present):

ALCXMNTR.EXE

Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum along with the report from WinKit Remover so we can check how everything looks now.

If everything seems fine we will start our fianal cleanup procedures.

I know on my last reply it was the first time I did all the things you asked me to do correctly, sorry if I annoyed you before, I'm such a true girlie sometimes and no I'm not of the blonde variety-ha ha! I'm only messing if your blonde and reading this!!

I ran Winkit Remover and I got the same fault as last time, here is the log, I've deleted the program now.
